how to design levels

I dont mean how to layout in a main.lu file (i have gumbo for that). How do I plan my levels? woul recomend pen and paper? mental? What makes a good level [import]uid: 86275 topic_id: 21883 reply_id: 321883[/import]

This is a pretty open question. I guess what makes a good level is one which engages the player, sets out a goal and challenges them to obtain it using old ideas in fresh ways. How you come up with those ideas is whatever works for you.

It depends on what kind of game you are creating, a point and click adventure level will obviously wildly differ from a scrolling shooter.

Perhaps if it is more skill than thought based, some dynamic level design is worth considering? Jetpack Joyride re-uses stock obstacles in a random way to make the gameplay unique every time for instance.

A website I come back to time and again is www.gamasutra.com. There features section has some incredibly useful articles by people from the game industry on pretty much any aspect of games design you can think of.
