How to test app in Kindle Fire?

I would like to test an app in an actual Kindle Fire device. How can I get it installed in the device? Do I need the Android SDK in my machine to upload it to the device via a USB cable? Or can I do it by pointing the web browser in the Kindle Fire to a private web server that has the .apk file?

I would love to hear from anybody who has tried it before. Any advice/directions would be greatly appreciated.
