I do like the application to be minimized by keeping running?

Example, when there comes a facebook message notification.

Unfortunately apps stop when minimalized. However notifications are separate thing and are handled by os which passes it to app.

I understand that the app stopped performing when minimized, but it is possible to reduce the execution screen of the app and allow other app to run without stopping my running? 

Like that iphone app that creates a virtual “home” button.
