Icon grows on launch (iPad 10.2)

Hi,

If I launch the app, the app icon grows and fills the screen and after that the actual splash screen is shown. The growing icon is looking just awful:  https://youtu.be/-jw0Y8htUk0

Tested with iPad Air and iPad Pro. If using iPhone 7, everything is ok (= icon is not growing on launch).

I’m pretty sure that I haven’t done any modifications to the project. I have updated Corona SDK (2016.2992) and purchased Slash Screen Control. I don’t know any other changes really.

How can I get rid of this growing icon effect?

This isn’t pleasant by any stretch of the imagination. You basically have to include every orientation launch image even if you’re a fixed orientation app.  Here’s my build.settings of an app that works. I was getting the zooming icon on my landscapeRight (default) app that supports landscapeLeft. I rotated the landscape image so that it was portrait with the image now looking sideways and added the portrait block to this:

 -- Required launch image files/definitions table (see section below) UILaunchImages = { { -- iPhone 4 Portrait ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "7.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "Portrait", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{320, 480}" }, { -- iPhone 4 LandscapeLeft ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "7.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeLeft", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{320, 480}" }, { -- iPhone 4 LandscapeRight ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "7.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeRight", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{320, 480}" }, { -- iPhone 5 Portrait ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "7.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-568h", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "Portrait", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{320, 568}" }, { -- iPhone 5 LandscapeLeft ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "7.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-568h", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeLeft", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{320, 568}" }, { -- iPhone 5 LandscapeRight ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "7.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-568h", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeRight", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{320, 568}" }, { -- iPhone 6 Portrait ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "8.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-667h", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "Portrait", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{375, 667}" }, { -- iPhone 6 LandscapeLeft ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "8.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-667h", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeLeft", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{375, 667}" }, { -- iPhone 6 LandscapeRight ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "8.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-667h", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeRight", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{375, 667}" }, { -- iPhone 6 Plus Portrait ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "8.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-736h", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "Portrait", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{414, 736}" }, { -- iPhone 6 Plus LandscapeLeft ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "8.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-736h", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeLeft", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{414, 736}" }, { -- iPhone 6 Plus LandscapeRight ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "8.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-736h", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeRight", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{414, 736}" }, { -- iPad Portrait ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "7.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Portrait", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "Portrait", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{768, 1024}" }, { -- iPad LandscapeLeft ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "7.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeLeft", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{768, 1024}" }, { -- iPad LandscapeRight ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "7.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeRight", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{768, 1024}" }, { -- iPad Pro Portrait ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "9.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-1366", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "Portrait", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{1024, 1366}" }, { -- iPad Pro Landscape Right ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "9.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-1366", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeRight", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{1024, 1366}" }, { -- iPad Pro Landscape Left ["UILaunchImageMinimumOSVersion"] = "9.0", ["UILaunchImageName"] = "Default-Landscape-1366", ["UILaunchImageOrientation"] = "LandscapeLeft", ["UILaunchImageSize"] = "{1024, 1366}" }, },

I’ve not tested this on an iPad Pro yet, but the code should be right for those as well.

Clearly Apple wants you to use Storyboard created launch images. We have a tutorial on that, but it’s base don Xcode 6, not Xcode 8 so somethings are a bit different, but the concept is the same.

Thanks Rob,

I followed this: https://coronalabs.com/blog/2014/10/21/tutorial-building-multi-screen-launch-images-using-xcode-6/

and I assume that I don’t then have to include those UILaunchImages lines to build.settings file if I don’t want to support iOS 7. Right?

At least now the icon didn’t grow on launch when testing on iPad Pro.

If you use the Storyboard method, you should not include individual static launch images in your package nor include that big table in your build.settings.
