International character sets

I know practically nothing about this subject so basically asking from some pointers, if someone is so kind…

So: my system includes a (non-Corona) windows PC program, in which the users types some messages, and those messages are at some point sent to and displayed in a corona smartphone app.

What I’m being asked to do is to support international (Japanese, specifically).

If the proper font / encoding is selected will the text boxes and labels displayed by Corona show Japanese characters? Unicode / UTF-8, something like this?

Thanks in advance. Never dealt with this before.
