iOS6 Apple maps support

Hi,

as you know, Google Maps is out, Apple Maps is in with iOS6.
I hope Ansca will have the SDK updated before iOS6 is released in fall 2012.
That goes for other iOS6 possibilities as well, of course.

And fwiw, Mac App development: Retina! [import]uid: 106658 topic_id: 27397 reply_id: 327397[/import]

##### +1 for the a new Maps API!

Thanks,
Rodrigo. [import]uid: 89165 topic_id: 27397 reply_id: 111294[/import]

I’m happy to report that the current maps API works (sort of) with the new non-Google maps. I have a Corona-made app on the App Store that uses maps, and the map actually loads just fine in the iOS6 beta. Pins drop as they should, and I can successfully switch between map/satellite view.

However, there seems to be some sort of bug with the current iOS beta, and I can’t close the map or transition away from the map screen. It doesn’t actually crash the app, but it does place it in a semi-frozen state until I force quit.

But since this is an app that works on iOS5, I think this bug falls squarely on the Apple side of things. Once they get the kinks worked out, the current maps API should continue to work as usual.

However…there is still plenty of room for improvement with the current APIs, Ansca! [import]uid: 27636 topic_id: 27397 reply_id: 111375[/import]

Stuff that works in the current iOS that doesn’t work anymore in the new iOS is a ā€˜regression’ bug. Please file a bug with Apple.

Please read this if you haven’t seen it.

iOS6 beta has been released under NDA so we can’t discuss the features/changes in the public forums. If you are an iOS developer, you can download the iOS6 beta and read about the changes yourself. I found someone who posted the iOS6 release notes, which talks about the new maps API.

@ewing: I filed a bug report with Apple regarding iOS6 maps not working with Corona-made apps, and despite the fact that I clearly stated it was a regression build, they sent the following reply:

Hi Jason,

This is a follow-up to Bug ID# 11690788.

Engineering has requested the following information in order to further investigate this issue:

We don’t see a way to get the Corona source code from the Corona website. There isn’t much we can do here without the source code. Please file a bug with Corona and they can follow up with us if they can’t figure it out.

Either that or, we need a source drop of Corona’s code.

We consider this issue closed. If you have any questions or concern regarding this issue, please update your report directly (http://bugreport.apple.com).

Thank you for taking the time to notify us of this issue.

Best Regards,

Please let me know if there’s anything you can do to help keep this bug on Apple’s radar - if the iOS6 release renders maps in existing Corona-made apps broken, it could cause quite the headache! Feel free to email me at jason (at) jasonschroeder (dot) com if you want to take this discussion off the forums.

Thanks,

Would you file a bug with us and copy everything from your Apple bug report in ours so we have everything? We’ll work with you to try to keep this bug alive with Apple. Please post your Corona bug id here so I can find it.

@ewing - I’ll post a bug either tonight or tomorrow (I want to take some time to prepare a main.lua that clearly illustrates the problem). I’ll be sure to post the bug ID here - thanks for the quick reply! [import]uid: 27636 topic_id: 27397 reply_id: 113988[/import]

@ewing: Sorry for the delay, but I finally put together what I hope is a clear bug description, with an example main.lua file. Unfortunately, I wasn’t given a bug ID # when I clicked ā€œsubmit,ā€ so I can’t give you the bug ID yet (that’s something that you guys might want to add to the submission accepted notice that pops up when you file a bug report). Hopefully I’ll get an email later with the ID (this has happened in the past), and if I do, I’ll post the ID here. Let me know if there’s anything else I can do to help in the meantime.

Thanks,
Jason [import]uid: 27636 topic_id: 27397 reply_id: 114522[/import]

Please keep us posted on any updates to this. Also NEED support for Android maps. [import]uid: 134946 topic_id: 27397 reply_id: 115678[/import]

@ewing - can you confirm if my bug report was ever received? I didn’t get an email confirmation, so I don’t have a bug #. But I definitely want to keep this on Apple’s radar if we can - the 3rd beta was just released, and this issue still persists. As it stands, if Apple releases iOS 6 without fixing this issue, any Corona-made apps that use the maps API will be effectively broken, including ones that are already on the app store and working under iOS 5. Thanks for your help! [import]uid: 27636 topic_id: 27397 reply_id: 115683[/import]

I could not find your bug report. What’s the exact title of your bug?
Maybe just file it again. Also add a note that the bug should be assigned to Eric Wing at his request.

[import]uid: 7563 topic_id: 27397 reply_id: 115827[/import]

@ewing: Hi Eric. I re-submitted the bug report, and it seems to have taken this time. I did ask for it to be assigned to you, per your request. The case # is 15771. Thanks for your help! [import]uid: 27636 topic_id: 27397 reply_id: 115843[/import]

I found issues with maps as well. Are you using the new Xcode? I had trouble with that. [import]uid: 19297 topic_id: 27397 reply_id: 115848[/import]

@ewing: I don’t know what you guys did, but THANKS! I just downloaded the iOS 6 beta 4 and maps seem to be fixed in Corona apps this time around. Thanks for your help with this - Apple seemed to consider the issue unimportant when I notified them about it, but apparently they finally took it seriously. Wahoo!

Best,
Jason [import]uid: 27636 topic_id: 27397 reply_id: 118546[/import]

Whew. Bullet dodged for once. Thanks for filing those bug reports. I think they did more good than Apple let on in this case.

Please keep us apprised of any other regression issues but also keep filing those Apple bug reports when you find them.
