iOS8 public build - can we have a timeframe please

Any news on when we will get a public build that supports ios8 and the new iPhone sizes ?

Still holding on submitting apps after the problems three weeks ago when apple changed upload and need to push them out soon.

Woudl really appreciate knowing where you are with this. Time keeps passing.

And please Rob don’t say “we are working on it”, there must be a lot of paying users out there like myself who are waiting for this.

Hi @Richard17,

We understand the need for this, but all I can say is that “we are working on it”. Smoothing out iOS8 issues is essentially our top priority at the moment and we’re going as fast as we can. This is a major OS upgrade from Apple and it has caused a huge ripple effect throughout the iOS development world, not just for Corona users. So I ask for your continued patience, and please understand that we are not treating this as a “side task” or anything like that.

Brent

@Richard17, there were many changes in the last couple beta releases as well as the the final GM. The screen sizes were not revealed until the Sept 12th Apple event and then only couple days ago along with everyone else, Corona Labs staff were able to get their hands on real devices. It is not surprising that the IOS 8 capable public release is taking a while to arrive. Even with the vast resources of Apple rushed releases bring nothing but trouble (referencing IOS 8.0.1…). Lets all sit back and wait while Corona Labs do the best they can in getting us this update.

@Richard17, I believe that with the exception of certain items that we are aware of, like things that need permissions and the Xcode simulator and such, that the core SDK could work just fine with iOS 8.  We don’t know exactly what you need for launch images yet and we’ve got a good guess as to icons.    If your app runs on an iPhone 5/5s, you shouldn’t have to do much to have it run on the new devices.  If you have @4x assets and you’re scale is 3.0 to use the @3x assets, the higher resolution images should get picked up.

Engineering is working through through the known bugs.  Not everything is an easy fix either.  As things are fixed, they will be rolled into daily builds.  Then when we have this stable enough, then we will put out a public build.

Rob

Thank you for replying Rob. Having worked for 25+years in the software development industry myself I do appreciate the problems you are dealing with. I am just frustrated that I have not been able to push the business app I have been working on for 6 months to apple for review since early september. Nothing like this has been written in Corona. I had taken an educated guess on screen sizes etc and spent august aiming at supporting the new multi window landscape capabality of the iphone 6 plus I thought was coming (and it did). Now everything is on hold. Please keep us updated and get out a public release as soon as possible. Regards Richard

I know where you are coming from, I am trying to be patient (see my other post below), but have not been able to publish since early september. I am just worried and dont want this to turn into another situation like the Widgets did at the beginning of the year.

Hey Richard, I hear and feel your frustration. I am excited to hear about your business app with “never before” features and will look forward to its release once all these issues are resolved. Based on the Blog post by Walter today it sounds like some good progress is being made…

Re the widgets, I think it won’t get as bad as that with the IOS 8. The issue with the widgets was (and still is IMHO) that Corona Labs saw them as a marginal part of the SDK affecting only a small population (not trying to derail this thread so lets not discuss this) and allocated resources accordingly. The IOS 8 issues are affecting everyone and it is a very very visible problem. I can imagine everyone at CL is right now working on this and nothing else. It will be resolved as soon as possible given the current CL resource levels and capabilities.

HI Brent

Its been another week. Any news to this please. You must be able to provide an estimated delivery date by now at least

Richard - Unfortunately we don’t have an estimate yet. Rest assured we are working hard to make sure everything is addressed and put out a public release as soon as possible. We realize a number of people are waiting for this.

Of course, you do have the option to upgrade to Pro to get access to a daily build, but we understand you may prefer to not do so.

David

I appreciate that David but it is turning into a long delay.

I know I could upgrade to Pro, but as I have already paid for basic, thats an additional expense that I should not need to incur to publish something. For my apps, pro would give me no other benefits.

If I use current public build with previous build.setting (without UILaunchImages table).

Does this means my app can still be published but will only available for iOS6 and iOS7 users?

It will be available to everyone.  At some point, Apple will stop accepting iOS 7 built apps.  Last year that happened around February when they stopped taking iOS 6 apps.  Though last year, because of the UI changes it was in their best interest to stop sooner than later.  They may let iOS 7 apps be submitted even longer.  Hard to tell with Apple.

Rob

Sorry Rob but cant resist saying - "Perhaps we will have a new public build by then "

Well Apple has announced Feb 1, 2015 as the last day they will take iOS 7 builds.

We know you all need this and we are not “stalling” to be stalling.  It takes considerable engineering efforts to bring a new public build to bear.  We have to make sure we have the right set of features, the critical bugs fixed and make sure we don’t introduce any regression bugs.  And in this case, wait on Apple to settle things down.  You may not have noticed but 8.1 was out about a month after 8.0.  No time to rest.  They have kept us on our toes this time around.

Rob

Please Rob - where are you on this ?

Another two weeks has passed, this just keeps going on and on and on

@Rob
I have to agree: the need for a new public build for iOS 8 is becoming more than urgent ! It is of the utmost importance to have a time frame for all Basic devs. Please advise asap.

I’ll know more tomorrow.
