iPad 3 Support

I would like to know if the Ansca team is already taking preparatory steps to supporting the retina display on the upcoming (or already released depending on when you read this) iPad 3, which should be launched very soon-- or about March 7 2012.

2048x1536 resolution-- that’s more pixels than my 24" desktop monitor!

Games/books/comics are going to look astounding on this.

I hope its an OLED screen too this time.

Cheers,

Peach Pellen (our helpful Corona ambassador  ) is checking into this, especially regarding the future of the newText() API which I asked about specifically. It’s not so much whether Ansca will “support” the iPad3… of course they will, there’s no question about it… it’s more about how some APIs like newText() will hopefully be rebuilt to utilize this incredible high-resolution display.

Anyway, the announcement of the iPad3 is scheduled for March 7, but I doubt we’ll see this device for sale until May or June. Either way, it looks like the “rumored” 2048x1536 screen is 99% a guaranteed feature… one media source even has an “iPad3 screen” in their possession, which hasn’t been confirmed by Apple to be an actual iPad3 screen, but it basically can’t be anything else based on the specs, size, etc.

I’m already designing my game to be compatible with the iPad3, and future tablets by other companies which will certainly try to match it.

One thing is for certain: apps will look amazing on this thing.

it will mean huge file sizes in terms of graphical assets, Apple recommend that when zooming, we use vector graphics to reduce the size, but we cannot draw our own stuff in CoronaSDK, can we? So a simple app with three backgrounds of 2048x1536 pixels has a filesize of 12582912 bytes (12.582 MB) each. So, that is 37.748 MB just for the backgrounds, then the sprites, etc… Welcome to a 100MB average app size.

One good thing that will arise out of all this is that the bloated CoronaSDK executable will look very small in comparison. So they could advertise as the compiled code is smaller than a single backdrop image on the iPad3… [import]uid: 3826 topic_id: 22568 reply_id: 90044[/import]

Yep, it kinda sucks but that’s the way we’re headed. Even if we could do complex vector graphics in Corona, how many people would want to? My current app, when finished, with three different versions of virtually every image, will be quite large (80-120 MB, i’m guessing). Still beats having a normal and “HD” version of the same app, in my humble opinion… and what would we use for the iPad3 nomenclature? “HD-Plus”?

I just noticed that a few apps in my library are topping 100MB already, i.e. Battleheart (247 MB!!!) and BattleNations (143 MB). Then again, these games both have nice graphics, so I can deal with it. If either of these apps get updated for iPad3, watch out!

Exactly. It’s like the iPad3 apps will need to be sold separately, as HD+ because I don’t need a 100mb app on my 3GS. That said, PNG when compressed may not be anywhere near as bad as 12MB for a full-size image, especially if it’s graphic art. [import]uid: 106887 topic_id: 22568 reply_id: 90054[/import]

There goes the 20Mb 3G limit… [import]uid: 10389 topic_id: 22568 reply_id: 90061[/import]

is this officially announced by apple or just guess of people ?

sorry but 2048x1536 resolution in tablet is hard to believe [import]uid: 12482 topic_id: 22568 reply_id: 90076[/import]

March 7 is the official announcement day. Anything else is speculation  [import]uid: 10389 topic_id: 22568 reply_id: 90079[/import]

It’s not confirmed by Apple (that happens March 7) but the promised screen resolution seems far more than a mere rumor at this point. One media “lab” showed off an actual screen (the physical unit) that is either an actual iPad3 screen, or one gigantic dupe. So it looks like this will be the actual resolution, but until it’s official, it’s just a pair of numbers.

That being said, Apple doubled the iPhone3 resolution from 320x480 to 640x960 with the iPhone4 without making that device thicker or heavier, and that was almost 2 years ago. So it stands to reason they can double the 768x1024 iPad screen in a similar fashion.

ok now i got that.

i would really love to see the face of designer he will definitely kill himself when making graphics for ipad3 if it has this much of disaster resolution.

sorry in case some one designer is over here

I don’t think we can count on a long delay before the ipad3 hits shelves. The past shows that apple moves faster with each device release (most of the time). The IPAD 2 hit shelves only 9 days after the announcement.
