ipad or itouch to test iphone apps.

Hi all,

I’m very new in corona development and in fact I’m developing a game on the Windows SDK. I’m also planning to go to iphone development, and I have the opportunity to get a Mac for developing the app for iphone and ipad. But I need also a test device, and right now I don’t have it, because my phone is Android. I prefer to buy an iPad, because I will use it for other things, but I don’t know whether it would be accurate to test iphone apps on a ipad. The other option would be an ipod touch, but I would only use it for that… Finally, the best option would be an iphone, but I don’t want to pay so much, as I’m starting.

What do you think? How will I see an iphone app in a ipad?

Taking into account that it will be my ONLY test device for a couple of months, which one would be the best?

Best regards and thanks for your patience… [import]uid: 42932 topic_id: 10873 reply_id: 310873[/import]

Get an iPod Touch is my advice.

I know lots of Devs who have gone many different routes and those who chose the iPod Touch are the happiest, overall, with their decision.

An iPad is awesome, I have multiple devices though and I can tell you that as great as it is, it will get neglected if you have a laptop, an iPod Touch, an iPhone or even if you don’t have a need for a device like that on a very regular basis.

Just my experience

Thanks Peach, I will take it into account.
The question is that my wife is more attracted with the idea of buying an ipad, and I take also into account her opinion
If I finally bought an iPad, ¿will I be able to test my own iphone apps on it? And the other way round, if I buy an ipod touch, definitely i will not be able to test ipad apps on it, will I?

I entirely change my opinion.

If your wife says buy an iPad then you buy an iPad.

I’m not being sarcastic or patronizing, FYI - I believe that if you are torn but she knows what she wants, at least her being happy with it means you’ll be happiest with it.

All devices are great anyway - but as a woman it is my duty to advise you to do exactly as your wife says! [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 10873 reply_id: 39752[/import]

Thanks, Peach
So in the iPad, how will I see iphone apps? In a central small window? There will be no further differences to testing them in an iphone?

Best regards [import]uid: 42932 topic_id: 10873 reply_id: 39758[/import]

Hi, Peach (or someone else)
Could you help me with the question of my last post? Thanks a lot…

Hey edaviu,

Sorry - I get lots and lots of notifications so sometimes miss one.

You are correct; see the link above for what it will look like on an iPad

thanks peach, then i’ll go for the ipad… [import]uid: 42932 topic_id: 10873 reply_id: 41480[/import]

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but I just want to double check this.

So if I buy an iPad I can use it to also test iPhone apps?

And they would just be in a smaller window?

I’m not only new to programming, I’m also new to iProducts.

This would save me a lot of money if I could just buy an iPad instead of an iPad + iPhone.

Thanks in advance for any help clarifying this. [import]uid: 123298 topic_id: 10873 reply_id: 94986[/import]

If you want to design apps specifically for the iPhone4, and you don’t plan for iPad compatibility, then get an iPod Touch 4th-gen (the one with the Retina screen just like the iPhone4).

If you want an all-around device for app development and personal/casual use, then go IPad, no debate. Since getting my iPad2 a year ago, I barely even touch the Touch anymore (bad pun, yes  ). Playing games on that tiny screen (or web browsing, etc.) is almost painful once you’ve accustomed to the big, beautiful screen of the iPad.

Well, you definitely make a good case for the iPad.

Will I be able to test iPhone apps on the iPad though?

This is the part I’m confused about. In my head I’m thinking I need both. In the image Peach posted, it seems that if you run a iPhone app in the iPad it will run the app at the iPhone size just in a smaller window in the iPad.

Is this the case? What about the dynamic scaling? Wouldn’t it just fill up the screen?

I would like my game to be both iPhone and iPad, with a release on android in the future.

I currently have no iProducts and was probably going to end up buying an iPhone and iPad, but the picture peach posted makes it seem like I only need an iPad…which is great for me.

Also I was wondering this, do you guys know what device is used the most to buy apps? What is more popular iPhone or iPad? [import]uid: 123298 topic_id: 10873 reply_id: 95033[/import]

Can you clarify which model of iPhone and iPad you’re planning to design for? We now have the following with these resolutions:

iPhone3GS: 320x480
iPhone4 : 640x960
iPad1/iPad2: 768x1024
iPad3: 1536x2048

In my opinion, the “middle” devices are what you should design for at this time. Older iPhones with that non-Retina display are still in the marketplace, but they’re slowly going the way of the dinosaur, both in resolution and processing power for running apps. On the other side, the iPad3 just hit the market and most people can’t even get one yet, so that extreme resolution is not (yet) the dominant design resolution. The 3 middle devices (iPhone4, iPad1, iPad2) probably make up the largest current iDevice group in use right now… and fortunately for you, the resolution between them is very similar (iPad is just a bit taller and wider in each direction).

Go for the iPad, it’s one of the best things to hit the market IMHO. Even if app development is part-time usage for it, you’ll still buy an amazing piece of technology that you’ll enjoy using for many purposes. [import]uid: 9747 topic_id: 10873 reply_id: 95051[/import]

Well…after looking at them on ebay, it looks like I’ll only be getting an iPod touch 4th gen for the retina display.

This is alright, right? If it works on iPod touch basically means it’ll work on iPhone and iPad? Just blurry on the iPad?

If any revenue comes out of this game I will definitely get an iPad and getting a better mac.

Thanks a lot for the help! Too bad this thread didn’t end with a happy ending with me getting an iPad! But I gotta pay rent lol. [import]uid: 123298 topic_id: 10873 reply_id: 95269[/import]

Miguel, basically, yes that’s right

For the record even though an iPad makes a lot of sense I actually prefer my iPhone by a LOT. My iPad is never used, just sits on my desk. iPhone I play with daily.
