iPhone Game Dev.. Hard Coding vs Cocos 2D vs GameSalad vs Corona vs other?

I think their free license does let you publish to the store. It just seems to have less features than the pro (and both have the splashscreen?) That for me is much more of a deal breaker. [import]uid: 10835 topic_id: 4475 reply_id: 14243[/import]

I must say, I’m confused why this seems to be such a sticking point for you. I mean, you posted this earlier:

I was feeling a bit reluctant to leave GameSalad behind but your comment helped me to get over it

Doesn’t that mean you were already planning to pay $500 a year for GameSalad? I don’t really know much about GameSalad, how does their free licensing work?

also I want to respond to this point:
Using Photoshop as an example, I can get pretty much everything I need done using Photoshop CS1… and the current version is CS5.

That’s true for that example (I too have plenty of software where I’m still using old versions) and really that applies to the majority of software, but when I said “the software” will be useless in a year I didn’t mean any random software you care to name but specifically iPhone development tools.

Ultimately it’s a question of output. Photoshop outputs standard raster formats like jpegs and png and that doesn’t change version to version. If you think about software with an even simpler output you’d be fine with even older versions; I know people still using ancient word processing programs because the final output is a printed page and that never changes.

The more flux there is in the output however the more the software needs to be updated to keep up. And Apple exacerbates the flux (with good reason, but still) with newer versions of iOS. iPhone development tools from a year ago wouldn’t be much use on current iPhones. heck, I purposely haven’t upgraded my phone to iOS 4 yet because I have one app that doesn’t work on iOS 4. “Purchase Corona for $349 and get all the features of Corona including the physics engine, spritesheets, OpenFeint, and more.”

To me, the above statement suggests that we do not get a physics engine, spritesheets or OpenFeint with the free trial, but only with Pro. Is this the case or not? [import]uid: 12649 topic_id: 4475 reply_id: 14331[/import]

There is no pro anymore. There is no Game Edition.

It is one product now called Corona SDK.

The Corona SDK is the full enchilada ! Physics, SpriteSheets, OF, etc. Everything.

I think $349 a year is well worth the price if it will do what you want and it will make you significantly more than $349 a year. If it doesn’t do what you need, it’s not worth $10.

The other way to look at it is if two tools do what you need, and one saves you a significant amount of time, you can either value it in terms of the dollar value of time saved or additional productivity. For example, using completely arbitrary numbers, 500 vs 100 hrs spent in coding = 400 hrs x $25/hr = $10,000, or 5 games vs 1 created in X time = 4 extra games x $10,000 revenue per game = $40,000. You fill in your numbers and decide if it’s worth it for you.

I’m still trying to see if Corona will do what I need it to do, and if it does, it’s well worth the money to me. [import]uid: 51497 topic_id: 4475 reply_id: 31763[/import]

I think SDKs like Corona and GameSalad are good for quick development for a prototype of an idea. If you find that the prototype is worth more investment to continue to develop, it may be better to develop using the official Cocoa (maybe with cocos2d), because it provides you with the most complete features.

However, if you use Cocoa to test a prototype, the cost may be high. If it even turns out that the created prototype is not worth to continue, the lost in the development in Cocoa is high too.

Hope it helps.
