Is GameCenter on Corona Roadmap?

I know it’s not on the Roadmap page, and I REALLY appreciate the current OpenFeint support, but even the folks at OpenFeint seem to be acknowledging that GameCenter is the future of social gaming on iOS (OF is putting more focus on their OpenFeint X features once GameCenter goes live with 4.1).

So I was wondering, is Game Edition going to eventually implement GameCenter, since it will be included with every new iTouch/iPhone once the iTouch 4 is released? And with that, it seems like if a game features social gaming that GameCenter support will most-likely be something that is generally expected.

If it’s not then I hope to have it be a viable suggestion to put into the suggestion box. [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 1869 reply_id: 301869[/import]

We’ve gotten other questions about this, and it’s under investigation.

My personal guess is that OF and GameCenter may end up coexisting on iOS, since OF will have cross-platform Android support and some pretty cool upcoming features that I don’t think have been made public yet.

On the other hand, I’m pretty sure that Apple’s Ping is NOT just a “social network for music”, and that we’ll eventually see Game Center features in there also, which would automatically make Game Center more attractive as the “default” answer on iOS.

On the third hand, if Apple doesn’t cut a deal for Facebook integration on Ping, then OF remains connected to a much bigger network via its Facebook connectivity…and so on. These are interesting times!

P.S., nice work on Dragon’s Keep! I was demoing it to a visiting company yesterday. [import]uid: 3007 topic_id: 1869 reply_id: 5622[/import]

Thanks a lot for the response Evan!

As far as what social gaming network to use, I’m confident that whatever Corona settles on will be a great choice. I really appreciate the OpenFeint support so far, it has added a level of depth to our games that could not have been achieved otherwise, so thanks again.

Also, thanks for demoing Dragon’s Keep! What did the other company say? (if you don’t mind my asking).

My wife was very flattered to hear that, she came up with the entire concept and created all the graphics for that one. [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 1869 reply_id: 5624[/import]

@jonbeebe – I believe they said “those graphics are really nice”, and then immediately bought a copy to demo Corona with

Regarding Game Center, the current Apple developer guidelines (gettingstartedwithgamecenter.pdf) seem to forbid any real integration between Game Center and Facebook or other networks:

* Friends. All Game Center friend connections are created through the Game Center app. There is no facility to “import” friend lists from another network. Also, you may not provide the player’s friends or related data to another network service.

* Leaderboards. You may not download Game Center leaderboard data and provide that data to another network. You can report scores from your app both to Game Center and to another network.

* Achievements. You may not download Game Center achievement data and provide that data to another network. Your app can report achievements both to Game Center and to another network.

* Multi-player invites. You may not use Game Center to send game invites to another network, and may not initiate a Game Center game invite from another network.

Of course, these are early days, and those terms could change. [import]uid: 3007 topic_id: 1869 reply_id: 5625[/import]

Well it looks like it might be OpenFeint for now then.

I read a letter written by the people at OpenFeint and they seemed like they were going to back off a little bit when it comes to their leaderboards/achievements because of GameCenter, calling that “phase 1” of OpenFeint and now that GameCenter is going live, they’re ready to move forward and focus on “phase 2” of OpenFeint which is their OpenFeint X service, focused on what sounds like some kind of in-app purchasing thing powered by OF.

I personally don’t mind either way which one Corona moves forward with, as long as my games are able to have leaderboards that allow them to compare scores with their friends AND the world I’ll be happy.

I’m about to make a feature request right now regarding an addition to the facebook.lua code and examples… [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 1869 reply_id: 5646[/import]

@evank: Actually, it seems like the newer versions of OpenFeint actually support Game Center for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the best of both worlds.

So to me, it seems like the best option for Corona would be to just update the integrated OpenFeint to the latest version (or the latest version that supports GameCenter) and then all the iOS developers can use OF/GameCenter and Android devs can still use OpenFeint… It’ll also alleviate having to incorporate multiple social gaming platforms on Corona.

Just some food for thought. Out of curiosity, what’s the status on this? [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 1869 reply_id: 6435[/import]

@evank. Is there any news on Game Center or OpenFeint multiplayer?

Thanks [import]uid: 8192 topic_id: 1869 reply_id: 8986[/import]

Hello, Doodle Jump actually ISN’T my game lol…

My game was called Doodle Dash! but I removed it from sale due to some trademark issues and I’m currently working on a major update that will improve the game in almost every way, and it will be renamed to “Tilt Monster”.

More details as development progresses. [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 1869 reply_id: 11336[/import]
