Is it possible to control the brightness of the screen? Also, don't stop music on startup?

As the subject says, I need to control the brightness of the screen to save battery life as my app needs to stay running.

Also, if a user play’s music from their itunes library then enters my app, is there a way to not stop the music they have playing?
