Is There a Splashscreen Now?

Does Corona SDK now have a splashscreen? I remember a while ago, when I used Corona, they used to boast about how their free package didn’t have a splashscreen. They used to use that as a reason why you should use Corona SDK instead of Unity for 2D projects. I love Corona, but there’s not even a cheap option to get rid of it now. It’s either $100 dollars a year or the Enterprise version, and as a student, that’s a lot of money! Maybe I’m wrong or misread something. Corona SDK is one of the easiest tools to use for the projects I like to work on, but I can’t stand the idea that there’s a mandatory splashscreen when they used to use the fact that they didn’t have one as a selling point.

And just to be clear, I’m most worried about this because if I were to update my already existing apps, I’m afraid that there will now be a splashscreen, and I developed them under the impression that I wouldn’t have to deal with them.

I don’t mean to sound aggressive if I am, I’m just a bit frustrated. I still think this is a great tool, but I just want to know what’s going on.

I am a student as well, but corona offers discounts on enterprise. Also 100$ per year is not that much compared to unity 35$ a month for the cheapest plan to remove splash screens.

We recognize that there are many users who can’t afford to pay for the product like students and hobbyists and we want Corona SDK to be free for you to use. You want us to to continue to built a great product including continuing to improve and enhance it. But to do so requires a staff of talented, dedicated engineers and support teams. We are not an open-source project that people work on in their spare time.

We think asking you to help by providing some brand recognization of Corona is more than fair so that you can continue to enjoy the product for free. As for the $100 / year fee, we feel that’s also more than reasonable for those who do not want the splash screen.

Yeah, I getcha. As a developer myself, I get that. The frustrating part was just having it as a selling point in the past, just to come back and find that my favorite feature is gone, and the apps that I already have can’t be maintained without adding new branding. But anyway, I’m not trying to change your mind or anything, I was just trying to figure out what happened and why it happened, or if I was just misunderstanding everything. Thanks for the replys, fellas.

Corona no longer being supported by perk or another company “I believe” is the main reason behind this move. For what corona offers, I think its free is probably the best free plan there is. Unity has splash screens and revenue limits. Unreal takes 5%. The list goes on. But I think corona is still a great option on it’s choice of free. I dare you to walk into your computer class and ask who has heard of unity and who has heard of corona sdk. I know in my class no one has heard of corona sdk and the person I showed it to is switching from android studio to corona sdk.

It’s a bit simpler than that. Markets change and business have to evolve to adapt to those changes. What worked two years ago or four years ago, may not be the model needed tomorrow. This isn’t a phenomena for Corona and the App development framework market, but all business and markets in general.

As Scott mentions, brand recognition is something we need and the Splash Screen will bring more awareness about us. And for the 2D market, once someone compares us to trying to do 2D in Unity or Unreal, Corona will generally win out.

If you don’t update (like me) will you still get a splash screen?

I haven’t been using Corona for a couple months because I started college so I haven’t updated on my main PC. I had to make a simple game for a project my group was working on and when I built it I didn’t have a splash screen. I recently downloaded Corona on my laptop and the new interface looks amazing btw!

Apps currently published will not have a splash screen if they were built with a version prior to us adding the splash screen controls. We want to keep Corona SDK free for you, but to do so, we need you to help us with brand awareness and that’s the purpose of the splash screen.
