Kindle Fire HD icons & home/status bar

Has anyone out there reading this successfully deployed an app for the Kindle Fire HD? I just got one and am working on getting my game ready for it… Few things specifically wondering about:

  1. I have Icon-xdpi.png as well as the hdpi, mdpi and ldpi icons in place, however in the main carousel of icons I clearly don’t have the right icon in place (it’s super blurry)

  2. I’ve read about the home/status/favorite bar that “can’t be removed or hidden”. I think I’ve read this a few times in the Corona forums. Has this been fixed in a latest daily build or will there be plans to enable hiding of this? I was just playing Angry Birds Seasons on my Fire HD and the status/home bar is hidden in that game as well as all nearly all other apps I use on the Fire HD.

Thanks,

  1. The icon will be blurry, until you submit and download it from Amazon it will be fine.

  2. The status bar on the Kindle Fire can’t be removed, on the Kindle Fire HD it is different and is not a problem. [import]uid: 8697 topic_id: 32433 reply_id: 128983[/import]

That’s good to know about the icon… Do you know if the carousel icon also uses the xhdpi or the 512x512 one? And, if it does use the 512 one, what should that be named? I’ve been looking around trying to find info on that but hadn’t found it yet…

And you are right about the Fire HD’s status bar - it does hide  [import]uid: 131038 topic_id: 32433 reply_id: 129047[/import]

Two other things…

Do you or anyone else know anything about the accelerometer’s gravity readings being different than iOS? For iOS I have a landscapeRight game and it uses x/y gravity readings to move an object around… on Kindle they were reversed - I had to swap to landscapeLeft to get it to work right (without having to recode an exception only for Kindle)…

And also… performance seems very sluggish, then gets fast, then sluggish - appears random. Haven’t come up with any solutions there yet as I haven’t really debugged it much. Did you experience this at all?

Thanks for the help! [import]uid: 131038 topic_id: 32433 reply_id: 129048[/import]

I believe the KF uses the 512x512 file and it downloads it from the Amazon store. The xhdpi Icon isn’t currently used by Corona, but it’s still only a 96x96 which would be very blurry blown up on the KF’s bookshelf.

I had all kinds of issues with the accelerometer on my Kindle Fire. Corona Labs made some adjustments and it became passable there. If I remember correctly, on the KF, it only polls the accelerometer once a frame instead of getting events constantly. So you need to set your sensitivity to match your frame rate.

I peeked at my code for the game that uses the accelerometer and I don’t see any one-off code for Android or the Kindle fire about numbers having to be flipped. [import]uid: 19626 topic_id: 32433 reply_id: 129075[/import]

Thanks for the info! Do you know what the 512 icon needs to be named for Amazon/Android?

About the xhdpi icon I thought I’d seen somewhere in Corona’s site - maybe a daily build or somewhere - that said it was now supported…

Very interesting about the accelerometer. With my game I’m getting really weird results - like performance is super-sluggish at times then gets faster (expected speed). I’ll do some more testing to see if the accelerometer polling is what’s causing that. [import]uid: 131038 topic_id: 32433 reply_id: 129318[/import]
