learning to develop art / sprite assets for game

I am just wondering what everyone else is using to develop their sprites/textures/backgrounds in their games. I am not really much of an artist so I am finding this aspect the most difficult for me. I have inkscape, and gimp to develop assets with, but I am not much good at creating anything with them.

I think learning to use inkscape would be more beneficial for sprites so I can change just the arms/legs and things like that to create the sprite animations.

Anyone have any tips, tutorials, suggested applications, encouragement :frowning: ? [import]uid: 135255 topic_id: 32590 reply_id: 332590[/import]

1: http://www.graphic-buffet.com/: You have to pay for the artwork but the artwork is very good
2: http://www.vickiwenderlich.com/category/free-art/ The artwork is free its not extensive but you get useful ideas on possible uses for the artwork [import]uid: 167310 topic_id: 32590 reply_id: 129654[/import]

@luna - Thank, this looks like a great post. I will check this out when I have some time later tonight. Love Metal Slug xD!

Do you know any good beginners inkscape or adobe illustrator tutorials? Something that shows you step by step what tools to use to trace your own drawing or something like that? I just need to understand what tools are used and for what, that type of introduction.

@lblake - Thank you as well for the links. Since I am doing this myself, I am willing and want to learn how to do the artwork, but it is always helpful to check out other peoples work.
