Legacy AdMob plugin retire

Hope someone can explain some more.

I got an email yesterday about corona update.

It said something about the legacy Admob plugin retires and I should start using a different admob plugin that cost $199/year…

I use Corona for learning programming and how apps work. I suddently don’t feel corona is free anymore if this is the case.

I understand that Coronalabs need to make money to keep up development but I am not going to pay $199 up front to be able to play around with something like that. I have put in an ad in my app for learning and as a motivating factor for doing more programming.

$199/year seams alot when I have only made $1 so far…

You say you are using Corona for learning programming and how apps work. Why do you need AdMob at all? You don’t have to have it. We offer plenty of other ad and monetization options for you if you want ads in your project.

Thanks for feedback @Rob Miracle.

Why I need admob:

  1. Motivation (not that it makes money but the fact that it could some day become something. Maybee not this app or the next but someday I get it)

  2. Learning apps is not just learning to write code in one texteditor. I learned a great deal about Corona and Lua by implementing admob.

  3. I also want to learn about bringing apps to market. What works and what doesnt. Not for these small projects I am starting out with but hopefully for later when I actually make something good.

  4. The feeling that I am not limited in freedom of what I can do when starting out. I spend alot of time looking at different options before deciding on Corona.

You are right Rob I don’t have to use the plugin. But I was using admob becourse it was a part of Corona and easy to activate and set up.  It is admob that I want and a google product is familiar.

I am reconsidering if I should use Corona at all after this move. I am afraid what I have to pay extra for in six month time.

If you can’t afford the paid AdMob plugin, but still want to have access to AdMob ads you can consider using the free Appodeal mediation plugin https://docs.coronalabs.com/plugin/appodeal/ .

When you register with them you link your AdMob account with them. Also with Appodeal you get access to Rewarded Video ads which is not available with the AdMob ad network.
