Million Tile Engine price survey

“The Million Tile Engine is a Lua library which was designed with one goal in mind: to allow you as a developer to build enormous tile maps in Tiled and run them at full speed on almost any device. 1000 tiles, 10,000 tiles, 100,000 tiles, 1,000,000 tiles, the only constraint on map size is device memory.”

MTE has come a long way since then. The first Beta release was just a simple tile engine, very fast yet limited to perfectly square tiles and not all that much else. We’ve since seen the addition of Physics, Isometric Maps, a multitude of new functions and capabilities, numerous performance improvements, hundreds of diligently crushed software bugs, and many new sample projects. With the retail release on the horizon I’ve shifted my efforts to documentation and optimization, but there’s still the open question of what MTE should cost.

Buying into the Beta is $24.99, and you retain full access to the 1.0 release as well, plus bug-fixes released after the fact. That is what I believe the engine to be worth, but I’m interested in hearing what other prospective buyers think. What would you pay for it, if interested? Should it cost less? More? The same? If you’d like, take a moment to answer the survey question. Feel free to leave comments and questions here as well, or to elaborate on your answers. I’d appreciate the input!

A duplicate of this poll is up in the App & Game Development - Games sub forum. Please don’t answer both of them! I’m trying to cast a wide net, not get duplicate results.

You can find far more information, documentation downloads, and sample videos on the Beta Release forum thread here: http://forums.coronalabs.com/topic/33119-million-tile-engine-beta-release/

I initially said $20, but after reviewing everything it offers again, $25 is a reasonable price. Something like Particle Candy is $40-$45 (not sure about exact price) and doesn’t offer what you’re offering.

IMO $40 is peanuts for what MTE offers. I’ve followed development on MTE since the beginning and been massively impressed by its development and not only your ability to introduce features/functionality based on people’s feedback, but also your willingness to help developers understand and take full advantage of it.

I appreciate all the price feedback. The results of the two surveys added together (assuming nobody voted twice) are as follows:

$5 (or less):     3

$10:                0

$15:                2

$20:                3

$25:                5

$30:                4

$35:                2

$40 (or more): 5

This has been most enlightening! While the overall trend favors the current price, it would seem there is some support for increasing the price of MTE as well. I’ll have more news for you all on that front soon.

Can’t believe some folks voted $5 or less… Shame…

Having followed the progress since an early stage and seeing how much time and effort has gone into this product I certainly think $40 or more is the appropriate price point.

Thanks ksan, I appreciate that.

My interpretation of the MTE price surveys is that support exists for increasing the price of MTE. Increasing the price would also help to offset my expenses. Some people would also like to pay less, of course. I think a compromise is in order! For the next four days, until Midnight on Monday the 17th, MTE is 40% off! On April 2nd, however, the price is going up to $34.99. So, the time to buy is definitely now! https://gumroad.com/l/staO/mtesale - $14.99

Wow! I’m going to buy this right now!

I’ve been following this for a long time as well. Forgot to ask, does MTE support/use the new graphics 2.0 engine?

Yes, MTE has been compatible with graphics 2.0 since version 0v958. Most engine features use methods and functions available to Corona Starter and Basic users because I have a lot of customers at these price tiers. The only exception at the moment is the optional new heightMap system which requires a Corona subscription with Premium Graphics access to run.
