My apologies for being so vague. I have only just begun designing it and dont have the plan laid out, just working on it as I go.
Im thinking it will be a sports app dedicated to sports fans, and allowing them to check-in at sports locations, like sports stores, bars, sports games. I also want it to feature some kind of reward system. What I am thinking of is the Foursquare for sports fans, that allows them to connect with each other by posting photos, and letting them know where they are. I also want it to feature some kind of sports updates so fans can get current scores, and track news stories, rumors, etc.

I’m not sure Corona is the best tool to build your idea. It sounds like you’re going to be needing a lot of php, mysql, and api interaction. You’d have to get in touch with some of the staff here, but I’m not sure Corona is the best for that (I may be wrong).
But your question was for suggested features, so… I guess it would be neat if users could get achievements based on where they check in (like check into a certain number of games where your favorite team is playing, etc). So it might be neat if the user could set their favorite team for each sport and then be able to get notifications for scores, news, etc. based on only their favorite teams (so they dont get bombarded with notifications).
