Need to buy a Mac to use Corona. Will this one suffice?

Hello -

I’ve always been a PC guy, but I’m willing to leave the dark side in order to give Corona a shot. On a fairly tight budget, so I was hoping I could get away with this config:

iMac 21.5-inch 3.2GHz Intel Core i3 processor
21.5-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display
4GB memory
1TB hard drive
8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics with 512MB memory

Can this config handle Corona without choking?
If not, any minimum specs for a budget Mac that will run Corona?

Thank you,

That’s fine. In fact if you’re on a tighter budget you can get a current-model Mac Mini, upgraded to 4GB.

I do my development on a 2.4Ghz 13" MBP which has essentially the same specs as a Mac Mini/4GB. Things run smoothly. [import]uid: 7026 topic_id: 5159 reply_id: 17104[/import]

That looks like more than enough to me; if you’re on a budget you could pick up a mac mini with a fraction of those specs and use the monitor, keyboard, and mouse from your PC. The main thing to watch out for really is that you need the latest version of OSX. Beyond that, if the computer can run the latest version of OSX then it can run Corona. A question along this same line. I have access to an older Mac Mini. The specs are as follows:
Mac mini Desktop 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo. - Apple Computer MA608LL/A
It has 2 gig RAM (max it supports) and 80 gig drive. It also has Snow Leopard installed. Is this considered enough of a system? If anyone is running this, does it emulate decently for the iPhone and Android?

Thanks in advance! [import]uid: 21276 topic_id: 5159 reply_id: 17267[/import]

What would be really cool, (though many tools to build) would be to use Corona on an ipad… [import]uid: 119 topic_id: 5159 reply_id: 17278[/import]

@integris & twknox:

I like you am predominantly a Windows user and was worried about performance since Visual Studio/Blend for WP7 can choke my 8GB Alienware laptop.

I run Corona and Xcode on underpowered Mac Minis and Macbook Airs and surprisingly it runs just fine. That’s a very reluctant +1 for OSX from me… [import]uid: 11393 topic_id: 5159 reply_id: 17279[/import]

I do debugging and testing in a VMWare instance with just 1GB of memory allocated to it; runs fine. :slight_smile: [import]uid: 13089 topic_id: 5159 reply_id: 17281[/import]

@udesignme you are running OS X in VMWare with 1GB RAM? [import]uid: 3826 topic_id: 5159 reply_id: 17495[/import]

Yup, runs surprisingly well. Don’t have a Mac at home and I do a lot of debugging and development here (late nights and all that); so whilst I choose what Mac to get for home (might just get what we have in the office, big beefy iMac’s) - I’ve been doing it in a VMWare instance at home (just 1GB allocated), can handle a stable 30 FPS in the simulator (not tried 60; game doesn’t require it). Could I discuss this with you offline from the forums? you can email me on jayantatjcu (at) gmail (dot) com and send me ur id to write to you. [import]uid: 3826 topic_id: 5159 reply_id: 17497[/import]

I also am quite interested in running it in VMware. [import]uid: 21276 topic_id: 5159 reply_id: 17498[/import]
