Please, add NOOK HD & HD+ Skins, so we may be able to test apps on that resolutions. [import]uid: 9058 topic_id: 31646 reply_id: 331646[/import]
One step ahead of you. We’ve actually already asked Barnes & Noble for the artwork needed to make this happen.
The next trick for us on our end is to set up the Corona Simulator to support screen size changes when the orientation changes. That is, the width and height are not swapped when changing the orientation of the device like it does on phones or the iPad. The aspect ratio actually changes because the bottom navigation bar moves with the orientation of the device, which the Corona Simulator does not currently support. This is also why we don’t have a Nexus 7 skin yet. That’s not a quick change on our end… but it’s on our todo list and needs to be done.

Joshua,
Can the navigation bar be hidden, so the app can use the full screen?
If the bar can’t be removed, what about creating a portrait and landscape orientation skin for each new Nook?
What are the working resolutions of the Nook HD and HD+? I would like to calculate the aspect ratio.
Thanks. [import]uid: 47723 topic_id: 31646 reply_id: 127991[/import]

Please, add skins for NOOK HD & HD+. We need not arty skins, but just the window we may test our applications on. Thanks. [import]uid: 9058 topic_id: 31646 reply_id: 128144[/import]
The bottom navigation bar cannot be removed on Nook HD. It always steals screen real-estate.
The Nook HD specs, include display resolutions, can be found via the below link…

Andriy, the artwork is not what’s blocking us from adding the skin to the simulator. The screen size change that happens upon orientation change is what’s blocking it. It involves a core rendering code change to make it happen, which is too risky to make because it risks breaking our iOS code too. We plan on making this change next month, after the Corona SDK release.

@Joshua
I only need the landscape skin. Can you make just that orientation?
You could also make a separate one for portrait.
The only reason I have pro is for Nooks new models HD/HD+. Since Pro makes it a point that Fire and Nook are supported, I would expect those skins to be part of it. I understand about being careful with the core, so separate orientation skins seems like the right solution for now?
Since HD+ is 3:2 I could use iPhone4 skin, correct?
HD is 16:10; do any of your current skins have that ratio?
Do I have this right, or am I missing something?

I suggest that you set up your config.lua to temporarily match the exact resolution of these Nook HD devices and make sure it is laid out correctly within the simulator from there. Just be aware that B&N is rejecting apps that display letterbox bars. They expect your apps to be take advantage of the full screen.
The skins will eventually come, but right now too many new devices and OSes came out at once and we’re just trying to get caught up at the moment. Everyone is just super busy here and there is no one left to work on anything else. [import]uid: 32256 topic_id: 31646 reply_id: 128189[/import]
Sidebar: I’m bothered by B&N’s refusal to take letterbox apps. My only rejected app is my Photo gallery from Yosemite. There is no scaling method that won’t trash the photos and because most of the photos are 4x6 in shape (3:2 ratio), I either have to crop the photo to fit or “frame it”. Well by using Letterbox, I’m choosing to frame it in black.

@Joshua,
Thanks for clarifying. Swamped, that can happen.
I am not following the config.lua trick, because my base layout if for a different device. Wouldn’t it be valid to use the iPhone4 skin, if I want to see what it looks like on the HD+, both being 3:2?
@robmiracle
Since you are talking about a picture viewer, what if you left it as letterbox, but then decorated the sides, the bleed area. It would no longer have black bars. [import]uid: 47723 topic_id: 31646 reply_id: 128197[/import]
But I choose to have that frame “black”. Ideally I would use zoomEven and let it crop the top/bottom from the pics, but I have too many scenes to redo because of where text elements are placed on the page.

FYI, My app update was approved Fri by B&N but first it was rejected for HD saying that a button was cut off at the bottom in the credits screen. It was fine in the original version (letterbox) and looked fine in simulator for the updated version ( zoomEven). Since I don’t have a NOOK HD I just estimated where to move the button, fortunately it worked & looks ok, and it was accepted. [import]uid: 40033 topic_id: 31646 reply_id: 128211[/import]

Rob,
B&N told me that they’ll make exceptions for letterboxed apps that display videos… and I imagine they would allow it for photos too. In those cases, letterboxing just makes sense. As long as the rest of the app is not letterboxed, such as main menus, set up screens, etc. then you should be fine. If you’re nervous about this, then one trick you can do is fill the letterbox area with graphics. [import]uid: 32256 topic_id: 31646 reply_id: 128314[/import]
flyingaudio,
Yeah, my trick will only work if you layout your app relative to the displayWidth/Height… in which case there is no point in using our dynamic content scaling at all. Okay, so forget that idea.
You are right that the iPhone 4 has the exact same aspect ratio as the Nook HD+… however, there is one more gotcha. B&N’s documented display width and height in pixels doesn’t do us much good if we do not know the height of the bottom navigation bar. That navigation bar steals screen real-estate and needs to be subtracted from the height in portrait mode and width in landscape mode (the bar moves when you rotate the device). We don’t have a Nook HD to play with anymore because B&N needed their prototype back, but I’ll ask their team what the height is. [import]uid: 32256 topic_id: 31646 reply_id: 128315[/import]
