OK if multi-element physics bodies have overlapping "parts" ?

Sort of an odd question here, but does anybody know if Box2D is “ok” with having the elements of a multi-element physics body “overlap”? Take the following example of a “plus” shaped object. The left example is composed of 2 overlapping rectangles, the right example is composed of 3 rectangles.

 aaa aaa
 aaa aaa
bbbOOObbb bbbbbbbbb
bbbOOObbb bbbbbbbbb
 aaa ccc
 aaa ccc

Is it allowable to compose this body of just 2 overlapping shapes (left example) or does Box2D prefer to keep the individual shapes non-overlapping (right example)? I’m hoping that I can just overlap when necessary. The example above adds just 1 more shape in the second case, but in more elaborate shape constructions I imagine I’d need to add 2-3 more shapes which might, at a certain level, tax the physics system more.

Thanks,
