Ouya or Amazon Fire TV?

I’m porting my game to console and I was wondering if I should go for the Ouya or Fire TV first. This is more of an issue of buying one or the other console as money’s tight (being a teenager with a minimum wage job, this happens often). I’m thinking Fire TV first as I will need to add IAP for the Ouya later and I’m on Starter.

Also, would the optimization for the controller be the same for both consoles? I’ve looked it up and it seems so, but I’d like to make sure.

So I own both and have developed apps/games with Corona for both -

Here are the pros and cons as I see it:

The Amazon Fire TV has a much faster GPU. I found that the OUYA’s aging GPU causes low FPS on some of my games. The main pro of the OUYA is… there are tons of fun games for it! I don’t use my Fire TV for anything except developing on it, so far. The OUYA, even when you aren’t developing for it, is a great local multiplayer system and has a really cool community vibe to it. You can also use it for emulation, VLC, Plex, XMBC, whatever. Both have a small userbase right now and a small number of titles (which actually is a good thing in my book, more eyeballs on your work!), and while OUYA has the larger number of titles, one could argue that Amazon does have the deep pockets to stay in the game longer.

There’s also the IAP issue you mentioned. For me, IAP is great, lots of flexibility, but if you’re on starter, you won’t be able to leverage it. I’ve also heard an OUYA 2 may be in the works, in which case it would behoove you to wait to buy an OUYA, as well.

As far as the controllers go, they are very similar and you won’t have a hard time adapting your game for both. There are some differences, such as the Amazon Fire TV remote control, but for the most part, it’s just switching out some key event definitions.

Good luck!

Thank you, I’ve decided I’ll be getting a Fire TV first, then Ouya later (preferably when I have money for Corona Pro). Thanks!
