Paid Apps vs Free (with paid downloadable contents)

I been noticing lately in the app store some apps are free
but if you want to buy extra maps ect you can buy a
map pack (downloadable content) for a certain price.
This reminds me of PSN (play station network) when
you buy a game and you want more maps,guns,ect
and you buy a pack(downloadable content). So
I think be a good idea to get people`s opinion on
whats best: Make a free app and a paid app (with

If your gonna make a free app. The application needs to have enough content, and be enjoyable for people to even consider the idea for purchasing the extra add-on content. But if your gonna be producing such quality content, then you might as well make it a paid for version of the application, and get more bang for your buck. However if you want to just display some more games and increase the ammount of things in your portfolio, then this is a good idea.

But if it’s your first app, and your gonna go all into it. Then I’d first create a paid-for version of the application. If people like it and it’s a pretty big success, then release an updated version with some new content. Otherwise you might go through all of this work and it might not even be a success. You know what I’m saying?

This is pretty much the strategy I have in mind too. I already have some additional game modes written down in my notes that go beyond what I’m initially going to release; if my game is at least moderately successful then I am going to implement those additional game modes and push out an update to my game where people can purchase the new game modes. Considering your application exists in the app store only by the number of downloads, it is also smart to make it free to play the first chapter of your game for exemple. Especially if you are a game developer from nowhere. In that way, people can download your game without any risk and if they really like your game, they will be starving and paying for follow-up chapters.
