Paid Reviews Question

I was wondering how much paid game reviews pay off?
Has anyone had great luck with such way of marketing and exposure? If so,
which review site did you deal with?

I haven’t used them so I can’t say how useful but you do want to be careful. Below is from Apple’s developer guidelines.

Developers who attempt to manipulate or cheat the user reviews or chart ranking in the App Store with fake or paid reviews, or any other inappropriate methods will be removed from the iOS Developer Program [import]uid: 147305 topic_id: 26535 reply_id: 107647[/import]

Thanks for reply! Good looking out, but I think Apple talks about actual game reviews inside the apple store. What I am asking is paying for a video review and having the game posted in review site. [import]uid: 62395 topic_id: 26535 reply_id: 107670[/import]

I would like to know this as well, still can’t believe sites charge for reviewing your game.

Touch Arcade seems to be a really popular site that don’t take money for reviews! I asked them for prices for a ad, it’s expensive and most spots are sold out through 2012.

Coming from an editorial background in video games, let me just offer some advice on this - there should be no publication (big or small) that charges for reviews. That essentially creates a huge conflict of interest, essentially it’s offering a bribe for coverage - which is plainly wrong and something I never came across in my 10+ years in the video game industry.

If a site/magazine offers coverage for a fee then stick well clear, you’re best of avoiding it completely as they are in turn misleading their readership.

Ads however are an entirely different thing all together. [import]uid: 33275 topic_id: 26535 reply_id: 111646[/import]

I agree with Sega Boy. Don’t sell yourself short and pay for sites to review your app. If they are worth it, they will find apps that appeal to their users and review them. I understand the temptation to pay for reviews to increase exposure but some reviews are hundreds of dollars. I’ve been interviewed by the newspaper and it created a lot of buzz and was free. Paying for a review seems so wrong and to me, sites that charge for the review lose all credibility in my mind. [import]uid: 50511 topic_id: 26535 reply_id: 112036[/import]

Thank you for all the great answers!
Since you guys seem to know a little bit about it, how do you guys think I should expose a mobile game? What kind of options does a developer have? [import]uid: 62395 topic_id: 26535 reply_id: 112054[/import]
