physics world vs sprite world

I believe Box2D has a “broad phase” that optimizes collisions etc to a local area, is that correct?

I was wondering if it would be feasible to set up a large world of physical items (say 50 screens long or more) but pool sprites attached to the bodies as an when is needed (ie when the body enters the screen).

Currently though i dont think corona allows you to separate bodies from display objects though. although I think ansca did say they were going to include a function to do this at a later date.

Alternatively, if you were to only create parts of the physics world at a time, one problem with not even creating physics bodies until they approach the screen area I presume would be that they might need to have some affect on the world prior to that

has anyone done any work on this?
