Please Vote (Suspended 'message' in Simulator)

Hello all!  I am writing for your support on a Graphics 2.0 feature change/request.

Please read entire post before responding.  Thanks!

Problem  - Suspending the simulator via keyboard shortcuts (usually) hides the game/app and shows a screen with the word suspended. (See attached image: suspended.jpg).

Current Workaround - Hold ‘Shift’ Key and use menu (Hardware -> Suspend) to suspend screen.

This may be acceptable for OS X folks, because the menu is at the top of the screen.  However it is totally unacceptable for Windows. Why?  On the Windows simulator, the menu is part of the simulator window and hides half the action.  So, for fast or timing dependent situations, it just doesn’t work.  (See attached image: menuselect.jpg)

Why is this important? - There are many ways to get action screen captures, but it used to be as simple as suspending and capturing the screen.  Now (on Windows), one has to use tools, tricks, or grab the whole screen and edit later.  Whatever the case may be, I’d really like the old functionality back, an I think I am not alone.

Fortunately, someone already started a feature vote to get this fixed.  I am asking you to vote for this feature to be changed as listed here, or to be put back the way it was.

Please vote or comment below.  Thanks!

**  Ninja  **Tip: I am also aware that there is a second workaround on Windows systems.  You can do the following to ‘hack’ the system.

  1. Close the simulator.

  2. Restart the simulator

  3. Shrink the the simulator window (CTRL + Minus Key).

  4. Wait for the event you wish to capture.

  5. Press CTRL + Down Arrow (this suspends).

  6. Grow the the simulator window (CTRL + Plus Key).

Now, if you’re lucky, the thing you wanted to capture should be visible.

You got my vote.  This was a great way to get screen captures.  Was disappointed when it no longer worked as before.

Best.

Please try to suspend using the SHIFT-CTRL-Down to suspend instead of just  hitting CTRL-Down.  This should cause the simulator to suspend but protect the screen.  We added this a while back to support making screen shots.

I was attempting to utilize the SHIFT-CTRL-DOWN method on the most recent public release, but it doesn’t seem to have been implemented with that build. Do you know which daily release had this fix in it?

Rob,

Thanks, but for some reason that’s not working on the Window simulator (just tried 2014.2248).  It doesn’t suspend at all when the SHIFT key is also held.  Only CTRL + DOWN ARROW suspends.

Thanks!

PS - I’m running on a Windows 7 Machine with no special install options or apps. i.e. It’s a vanilla install so there should be no non-standard key captures going on.

Cheers,

Ed

Woohoo!  I just tried Command+Shift+Down on the Mac Simulator and it doesn’t hide the screen anymore in suspend mode with that big orange animating icon!  Thank you!  (I’m using build 2248).

This was fixed a while back (pre 2100 for certain).  I don’t have Windows to test on.  I’ll check back with engineering…

Rob

I remember testing this on Windows, honest!  But it’s definitely broken now.

Daily Build 2014.2249 and above should have the fix (Ctrl+Shift+DownArrow to suspend without visual indication).

My apologies that the option to suspend without the visual was broken on Windows.  I know that when a change impacts someone’s workflow it’s tempting to see it as gratuitous but, at least in this case, people were wasting significant time wondering why everything seemed to be broken when it was just that they’d inadvertently suspended their app but there was no way to tell.   They were equally indignant that suspending with no visual indication was “totally unacceptable”

@Perry and @Rob,

Thanks guys.  It is in fact fixed in the new release 2014.2256.

Also, I understand the whole damned if you do, damned if you don’t issue.  However, the addition of the ‘shift’ key gate should help alleviate this.

Cheers,
