Poll: How easy is it to copy an iOS app?

It appears that it only took a few days for my iOS app to appear on a download website. The good news is that, from what I could tell with google translate… it’s a Korean site,899 rating were “thumbs up” and only 15 we “thumbs down”!

I guess I knew that android apps were easy to move around but I’m a bit surprised that iOS was so easily hacked. Anyone else see this with their apps?

Just curious,

one day i’ve seen hundred new players an hour for Grooh in the gamecenter. then i realised it was all because of a hacker site (apps.su). one third of our players are hacked ones.

really a shame, since the game only is 1 or 2 $. [import]uid: 90610 topic_id: 24388 reply_id: 98584[/import]

Apparently, it’s the easiest thing to do in the world.

Did anyone try to see if in-game ads work and bring revenues from the pirated copies of the games?
I sincerely thought more than once to skip the AppStore completely, and crack my own applications and put online .ipa files of my own applications and release it freely to the world. [import]uid: 80100 topic_id: 24388 reply_id: 98601[/import]

I think pirating apps at this stage is pretty easy but as others have said the people pirating aren’t going to buy the game anyway so you aren’t out $.

I prefer to see it as a positive; they might post on Facebook, mention your game somewhere, etc and get you some legitimate downloads.

This doesn’t make it any less wrong, it’s theft - but it’s unavoidable in many industries (film, music, etc) and I try to be positive

Just my 2 cents.

@peach: you’re right there. BUT the thing that hits me most is that if you get a support question, giving walkthroughs, whatsoever… you never know if its a legal owner or not. so you’re actually spending time and money for those hackers. [import]uid: 90610 topic_id: 24388 reply_id: 98733[/import]

I agree with everyone’s assessments. Hopefully people who know they are helping themselves to a copy aren’t asking for support. Otherwise I was pretty stoked to see that so many people thought my app was worth “borrowing.” At this stage in my business plan any buzz is good buzz.

I am sure there are others like me that don’t mind at all. Don’t get me wrong. I would love to make money and even make a living doing this. However I really do this for two main reasons.

  1. I love to create. Creating art (bad or not). Creating an idea and growing it into a better and better idea. I am sure many can agree with this sentiment.

  2. The joy of others interacting with my creation. If someone did steal my game. That shows interest. If they have access to all those pirated games. They still chose my creation to play. If they want support, they also must enjoy playing it to bother. I guess I look at everyone as a user and/or player, not a customer.

The downside to me not thinking of them as customers is I have a hard time with the “customer is always right” mantra. They can be right, or maybe not. However I don’t let that define my creation. Maybe thats just stubborness or ego. I hope it’s more stubborness. Little things can change, but the idea must stay intact, otherwise it no longer feels the same to me.

Hmmm ok, I have rambled on enough. [import]uid: 56820 topic_id: 24388 reply_id: 98792[/import]

Piracy is rampant. I haven’t released a game yet (oh that’s coming…I am but one man lol) but I can see the concern. Android’s piracy is insane. When I got my Samsung Galaxy S a year ago, a friend said “Dude I can get you whatever games you want”, which was about the same time I started with Corona (it was June 2011). I bought my own games, they are what .99 a couple bucks MAYBE 5 for something like N.O.V.A or some other higher end title?

I agree with @Peach also, users steal and they may generate legit traffic for you

I feel a side rant coming on, but here it goes:

Why do people feel so put off by …a 99 cent game or *gasp* a 2.00 game. Think about this for a moment, I just took my happy ass (american saying, don’t ask lol) to STARBUCKS where I spent $4.10 on a triple shot cafe mocha.

How long did that “entertain me”? About 15 minutes and after it got cold I tossed some of it out (shame on me).

A game like angry birds, cut the rope or whatever you pay 99 cents and get…who knows how much time for a BUCK. WTF is wrong with people?

99 cents, will buy you more entertainment that most people spend on freaking coffee. Movies, same thing out here in Los Angeles, CA (USA) go to the movies will cost you $14 dollars for about 90 minutes of entertainment (or if the movie sucks, then you want to punch something) + 6 dollar drinks, 9 dollar popcorn…ouch.

Until the majority of people get unified in the way they see values of apps, people will just act dumb and be pissed off at 99 cents, when they spend 5x that much on other STUPID CRAP.

Whoa, deep thoughts. I shall calm down now, but that’s my thinking on app purchases. I wish more people just REALIZED the value they are getting out of an app before they got hit with the stupid syndrome and decided to pirate something.

Grrr.

Ps. Yea, I went off but it makes me so freaking mad. I am not necessarily made at piracy, I am mad at PEOPLE that don’t think about the value they are getting. [import]uid: 61600 topic_id: 24388 reply_id: 98806[/import]
