Premium to Freemium

Is it possible to go from a premium paid app to a freemium model without having all the people who currently paid have their content taken away due to the change? I currently have a paid app but want to switch to freemium in the near future. [import]uid: 79620 topic_id: 24203 reply_id: 324203[/import]

Yes it’s possible as long as you lay some kind of groundwork for it.

All the IAP’s do is return you a true/false that things have been paid for, it’s up to you to do something with that information.

You could check on startup of the new free version to see if a high score was already saved by an old version, indicating they had the app before the freemium version. At that point you could unlock the items the new users have to pay for.

It is certainly doable, but it’s pretty far from optimal imo.

While you can certainly upgrade your previous users that first time they launch the free version, the problem becomes when they do a fresh install or migrate to a new device (the IAP can be restored, the legacy users cannot).

One thing that’s possible is to manually back up their purchase to the cloud, for example I believe OF provides that ability built in if you happen to be using it, so they can restore their purchase any time they log into that associated account. I have no data that gets saved in my app so checking for a high score isn’t gonna work. Maybe i’ll just have to go for a “lite” version instead. [import]uid: 79620 topic_id: 24203 reply_id: 97745[/import]
