Procedure for dealing with 2 separate iPhone and iPad builds

I have already submitted my app for the iphone to iTunes connect last week and now have finished the higher res version for the iPad and not sure what to do.

I would have liked to give the iPad version for free to existing iPhone users but is there anyway to do this?

I am lost and not sure what to do next.

I believe i am forced to upload the two builds as separate apps until Corona supports universal builds, is that correct?

What is the workflow that has worked for other users?

Just to add one more question,

You will have to do two separate apps for the two different builds. The users the I’ve talked to have actually slightly reworked their apps to do different UI at the higher resolution.
