Publish one mobile app in twenty different themes

I attended a conference on subject of mobile app market strategy recently. A famous speaker (a mobile dev book author) seriously spoke that , in order to have more downloads, same app can be published to app store for twenty times with different titles and themes. Maybe one of themes will be accepted by players and more downloads.

This effort sounds odd, boring and a lot of effort, is this a good approach to get more downloads? [import]uid: 150242 topic_id: 28456 reply_id: 328456[/import]

Seems borderline unethical! [import]uid: 147305 topic_id: 28456 reply_id: 114855[/import]

Actually not unethical, but actually it makes some sense.

If you have an app with a certain graphics (theme) then that theme may not be appealing to some people so they won’t download it, but they may download it if it had a different theme that appealed to them more. Everybody has different tastes and what’s visually pleasing for someone may not be visually appealing to somebody else.

My first App on the App store was a match 3 game with Halloween graphics and while it played ok, it didn’t get too many downloads, after Halloween I changed the graphics to a smiley face theme. suddenly I got 100’s of downloads per day, in fact that app has gone on to make me about $40k in revenue since it was released.

Now ironically when I changed the theme, I was contacted by several people to say that could they have the Halloween theme back because they preferred it as the smiley faces wasn’t what they liked, so I added the Halloween theme back to the app but as an option, to keep everybody happy.

So although you may think it’s unethical it’s actually does make sense. [import]uid: 8697 topic_id: 28456 reply_id: 114885[/import]

I do not think its unethical. Its totally fair to make available your games by different name and themes. After all its up-to user to download it or not.

Great to know it is fine to do this way. Maybe publishing many times is not unethical(it is not hurting anybody) and make sense to drive downloads but boring and wasting time. Do you think putting various themes as options in the same app is a better idea? [import]uid: 150242 topic_id: 28456 reply_id: 114940[/import]

same company, same product, different themes and names, same release date and package size [import]uid: 111283 topic_id: 28456 reply_id: 114947[/import]

The comparison is funny and intuitive, great to get your input! [import]uid: 150242 topic_id: 28456 reply_id: 114951[/import]

@ cublah

Well, you convinced me. I guess I had a bad taste in my mouth about other markets where crowding the market place with sheer duplication was an issue. It makes sense in that you target different groups. [import]uid: 147305 topic_id: 28456 reply_id: 115246[/import]
