Question is;

Seeing that this upload is 2 years old, is this the deprecated way to do sprites? Or is this sample still usable?

The old sprite methods are deprecated, but they still work.  We encourage people to use the new imageSheet technology (very similar, just works better).  I don’t know when the old sprite methods will be removed, but you should be able to adapt the tutorial fairly easily.
