[Resolved] Default.png Dimension For Android

I used 640x1140 for Default.png in my previous letter boxed app I built for Android, but now that more devices are available, I’m wondering what might be a better dimension I should use for my latest project, which is letter boxed too.

I scanned through this, but I’m still not quite sure. I read the advice given in this thread, but I’d rather add a single Default.png and go with it – at least for now.

So, what do you think is the optimum dimension that would probably cover most Android devices? I’d probably pick larger size over smaller size, but what makes a good compromise in terms of height & width ratio based on experience?

I’d so appreciate hearing any and all thoughts on this. Naomi Edit: I’m leaning towards 1152x1920, but would that cause some Android device to crash? Is it too big?

I just came across this:

And… http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2011/07/new-tools-for-managing-screen-sizes.html

Maybe I’ll go with 800x1280…

That sounds like a reasonable size.  Since I’m building for both, I just use the iOS default.png.

Hi Naomi,

You might want to glance at the chart here… it shows various options and which OS they apply to:

Thank you, @Rob and @Brent.  Actually, right about the time the Forum was transitioning from old to new, I posted on the old Forum about the doc where Launch Image is described in detail (thanks, Brent, it’s the very same doc you posted the link to), and I marked this thread as Resolved.

That said, subsequently, I added all of the four Default.png types listed as Launch Image for Android, built APK and installed it on Android devices, but I found it didn’t look all that great after all.  They all appeared with thicker black strips on both sides (using landscape) compared to 800x1280 version.  At least that’s the case with the Android devices I tried on.  So for now, I feel I’m better off with with a single Default.png file at 800x1280.

I submitted a comment on doc page describing my experience with the Android Default.png files.  I hope some adjustments will be made for the recommendation so that we’d see less black strips on more modern Android devices while ensuring there will be no crash on older devices due to a huge size png.

I’m having a similar issue on a “tall” droid device - a 7" tablet. It seems to use my “Default-Portrait.png” image which ends up with black bars and the top and bottom (when holding in portrait orientation) when I would prefer it to use “Default-568h@2x.png” or even “Default@2x.png” which would probably look better.

Is my only option to drop “Default-Portrait.png” out of my folder when building for droid?

Thanks,

Nathan.

Hi Nathan,

In the following guide under “Launch Images”, note that the “Default@2x” should work on Android.

http://docs.coronalabs.com/guide/distribution/buildSettings/index.html#launchimage

However, you should still probably consider designing the launch image with a black background if possible, since there are less options for these on Android, and there’s no guarantee how they’ll look on they myriad of different screen sizes inherent to Android.

Best regards,

Brent

Hi Brent,

Yes - I am supplying both, but it seems like poor choices are being made about which one to use. On 2nd thoughts I’m reluctant to drop “portrait” out of the droid build - it needs to be there for any wider devices.

Oh well…
