Scalling question

I first want to apologize as I know this question has probably been asked a million times, and I have tried to seek information and understand it before posting this question…but for some reason I am just not understanding what I am reading because I am very new at developing (trying to teach myself Lua and Corona at the moment).

I have been following a lot of the sample guides and projects out there. Most all projects I have been doing, the background images are 320x480.

Now I know that there are differences in resolution between the iPhone, iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and then with retina displays (although I know that there are differences, I don’t feel confident that I could explain exactly what those differences are and how they react differently…)

With that being said, I have an iPhone 5…and I have gone through the process of building the app and installing it on my iPhone 5 for provisional (developing) purposes.

As probably expected…what was showing up in the Corona Iphone Simulator (which looked perfect), is now only taking up 1/4 of my iPhone 5 screen.

I went ahead and doubled the image size for the background, rebuild and installed on my device. Now it looks a lot better (although I believe it is optimized for iPhone 4 and not 5 because there are still black boxes at top and bottom), however, I can imagine if this app would be installed on a normal iPhone it would look too big.

I apologize for rambling…but my questions are this…

  1. By me doubling the size of the background image, is it now optimized for the Iphone 4 and what is called Retina Display?

  2. My ultimate goal is to learn how to program in Corona SDK and with Lua…and now I am wondering what the best way to develop a game so that it looks great and fills up the screen on all devices?

I really appreciate any help anyone can give me. And if you could try to “dumb down” your answers to make it really understandable I would really appreciate it too. Thank you! [import]uid: 219435 topic_id: 35823 reply_id: 335823[/import]

Hi Adam,
Welcome to Corona. A good starting point for this topic is the following tutorial. It should give you a clear understanding of working with different devices, resolutions, and “picking” the correct image for each one.
