I see that there are possible events handed back from orientation change for face up or face down but no way to simulate it.
Also, would be nice to have a right side up button on simulator.
How would I get the actual angle for “UP”, not just the 6 typical positions?
Where is the event.xxxx defined for orientations?

The simulators are mainly for laying out the resources in your app and not to emulate every feature of a device. That’s why you need to test and debug your app on an actual device.
We need to add additional features to the simulator but I’m afraid face-up orientation is not a highly requested “roadmap” feature.
