I was under the impression that it was not possible for two apps/games to have the same name so was shocked today to see another game on the app store with an identical name to mine

As apps are identified in iTunes by their package names rather than that name it is technically possible to have identical names (as has been seen by your unlucky situation) however I would have thought the second party would have been asked to change it by the reviewer, but only if they are aware of the other app.
According to the release dates the other game was released only a few days after yours so it may well be a weird accidental coincidence. Unless of course you posted about your game beforehand to get some interest and they noticed the possible popularity and decided to make a simple game to try to tag along and release it close to yours.
