I believe its to generate stats for this page: http://developer.coronalabs.com/dashboard/reports
If you have an app published, it shows you some basic analytics’s.

Hey there - it can be turned off if you aren’t using certain network APIs by setting launchPad = false in build.settings. (Understand you will not have analytics on your app if you do that, however.)
