I am hoping for a steamworks plugin though. That would be nice.
The $100 fee was introduced last year if I’m not wrong. It was a way (according to Steam) to prevent people putting random joke games (Half Life 3) and demo links to malware. I heavily disagree with them (Gabe won’t be able to sleep this night) since the QA of their own entries should be done by them, and not listen to just the votes or likes, that can be manipulated by a group, or robots.
On top of that, Greenlight is a hit on the face to indie developers since you aren’t able to publish your games to Steam right away and it works more like a Kickstarter campaign (without any reward, but you get free views before release on the other hand).
And devs/publishers of AAA games (and not-so-AAA games, who knows what criteria they create to say you are worth their time) just call put whatever they want. And then you have some stupid ugly ports (like the last Batman, who ran at 15FPS with GTX980) that they don’t even care to test or ask the public if the game should be published in steam. Because im 100% sure not even a Batman game that runs so bad is going to be greenlighted by the people/Steam.
Anyway, if you don’t care about spending 100usd/have a good or decent game/don’t need to get money right away, the Greenlight idea is good if you manage to combine it with maybe a Kickstarter? and you are dedicated to show the best of the game so people get a good idea and approve your game.
And you have to implement their SDK, right?
So we can’t publish there until a steam pligin is abailable for Corona?
It’s on our to-do list. These things just take time.
Of course, there’s nothing stopping someone from buying an enterprise license and building their own SteamWorks plugin if they think we’re being too slow.
I have a major project which will be ready for release in 4-6 months. It’s absolutely perfect for a Steam Release on PC & Mac. Putting the feelers out there for anyone who might be capable and interested in building a plugin should Corona’s own not be ready in time?
As far as I know, you don’t need to implement Steam SDK to your game. There are many games out there without achievements, trading cards etc. but I think it’s important for players to have those integrated into your game.
