texting API

Hey guys,
Is there an API available to enable texting in an app. I want to be able to send a text to another phone from the app I am making, but keep it separate from the regular iphone texting. I need to be able to do it from the app, if that makes sense. Thanks.

For various security and abuse reasons, Apple will not permit an app to blindly send a text message. You have to go through their interface. Corona SDK (as you would have to do via XCode/Objective C) when called will popup a window that is pre-filled with your text message and person to send it too, but they are going to get an Apple originated screen and the user will actively have to send the message from that screen.

Hey thanks for the quick reply. That does make sense. And the apple screen pre-filled would be acceptable. So, in Corona SDK what API’s do I use to fill in a text message and then call up the pop up window pre-filled with the text I entered while in my app? Or are you saying I still need to do that in xcode? Sorry if I am not understanding everything. I am still new to this. Thanks.

You could use pubnub to send messages between devices, using phone numbers as channels.

The user would have to enter their phone number on first running the app (I don’t think we can access the phone’s contacts yet), and use that number to create a channel to subscribe to.

Providing the other person has the app too, they will receive messages sent to their ‘number’ or channel.

That helps a lot. So, what if I wanted to send one message to say 6 people on a contact list. They would all have to have this app and be subscribed to that channel by entering their numbers as well, or entering the original users number? Maybe I am making this too complex, does Corona SDK have twitter access? [import]uid: 79586 topic_id: 22691 reply_id: 90514[/import]

See the native.showPopUp() API call:

You should be able to send to multiple people.

No XCode needed.

Thanks, I will look at the tutorial. Is the native.showPopUp() API call, the only one I need or should I still use the first one, multi-player networking, you mentioned? It looks like the native.showPopup will work. Is that right? [import]uid: 79586 topic_id: 22691 reply_id: 90517[/import]

They are mutually exclusive. The native.showPopUp() is about ending email and SMS messages.

The Nick’s discussion of pubnub is a way to send messages to other people running your app using their phone number as the way to identify that particular player to do multi-player game type applications.

To me they are two totally different things. [import]uid: 19626 topic_id: 22691 reply_id: 90520[/import]

oh, that makes sense. I will have to just get the best one for my app I guess. As long as they can both do it from within the APP that works. Thanks again robmiracle, you are a miracle worker. [import]uid: 79586 topic_id: 22691 reply_id: 90527[/import]

There are certainly quite a lot of particulars like that to take into consideration. That could be a great point to convey up. I offer the ideas above as normal inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up the place the most important thing will likely be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if finest practices have emerged round issues like that, but I’m positive that your job is clearly identified as a good game.
