I can’t wait until the new Game Edition version comes out, and especially can’t wait to see what’s new.
And yes, awesome new icon [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 2262 reply_id: 6842[/import]
Just started my 30-day trial yesterday; now getting my feet wet with Lua. I have to agree… from what I can see/understand so far about its capabilities, the Corona engine looks awesome!
I certainly hope it will be awesome for my purposes… I’m exhausted with changing engines/languages every few months. Almost a year ago, I started with “GameSalad” but soon discovered it was much too limited for what I wanted to build. I expect there are a few ex-GameSalad or current GameSalad users now using Corona; greetings to you all!
After that, I tried Torque2D/TorqueScript and found that it contains considerable power and great capabilities. But recently, much to my annoyance, the floor dropped out on that because Torque2D is undergoing a massive ground-up reconstruction which will not arrive until mid-2011. With that reconstruction, TorqueScript will officially be killed off and something else (Obj-C?) will replace it within that engine. I certainly don’t regret learning TorqueScript; it taught me a great deal about scripting languages, functions, variable scopes, etc., all of which certainly apply to the beautiful-looking Lua!
Anyway, here’s me crossing my fingers that Corona will be “the one” for me: the platform that I’ve been seeking with a nice blend of power and simplicity. I must admit that I cringe at the thought of learning Obj-C in order to use an engine like Cocos2D…

Welcome Brent!
I, too, switched from GameSalad to Corona. You will find that the community here is very helpful and the Ansca folks seem to be VERY passionate about their products (see their YouTube channel) and they really do listen to our feedback. Currently their documentation could use a little work but they make up for it tenfold with the videos, code examples, and wiki posts.
Anyway, good luck with your project!!!

Welcome Brent! I think you’ll find Corona more than adequate for your needs, *especially* if you’re coming from GameSalad.
I too had some GameSalad background before discovering Corona. You can read more about my “switch” here:

Thanks for the link to that story Jonathan, it’s very interesting! I think your history in game development is similar to mine… self-taught, hobbyist, looking for a way to bring games to iOS as efficiently and easily as possible without giving up power. Isn’t that what game design should be about? I tinkered with BASIC on a Commodore64 when I was young, tacked together some simple platformers, and I’ve since had game ideas swimming around in my head. Unfortunately, I could never bridge the gap which I assumed was necessary: learning an intense and complex language like C++ or Objective-C.
I thought GameSalad was going to be my solution to that. I soon discovered, just as you did, some of the glaring inadequacies of that package. It was that constant frustration – trying to wrestle GameSalad at every turn to accomplish some of the most basic things – that took me to Torque2D. Torque is very very powerful, and TorqueScript isn’t difficult to learn, but as I described above, the “new” version will not be available for 6-8 months. I simply don’t care to wait that long to work on my games!
Following that decision, I actually tried to return to GameSalad, armed with a new idea. A much simpler idea, I figured, that might be possible in that engine. I figured wrong. It took me about half a day to realize it’s not up to task. Some people have had considerable success with GameSalad and made a surprising profit, but it’s definitely not for me.
And now I have discovered Corona! This appears to be the winning solution for me, just as it was for you and also many others here. I hope my instinct is correct.
Well enough chatting, I have some Lua to learn right?

Welcome aboard !
If you need anything from us, just let us know.
Cheers and can’t wait to see your Corona game on the app store.
Carlos
ps:thanks everyone else for their kind words, and @dknell yes our docs suck, and we are working on making them better. There are changes coming. [import]uid: 24 topic_id: 2262 reply_id: 7274[/import]
@Brent: Good luck with learning Lua, I guarantee it’s easier than anything else you’ll code an iPhone app/game with.
If you’re worried about performance and quality (which is one of the many things that made GameSalad not an option for me), Corona also excels in that area. Here’s a screenshot of our latest game that’s waiting for review:
Click to enlarge the screenshot (will open in a new window/tab).
In the screenshots above, those are high resolution graphics optimized for the 640x960 display and still performs very well despite the heavy resources.
Good luck Brent and once again, Welcome aboard! [import]uid: 7849 topic_id: 2262 reply_id: 7295[/import]
Is this version of the Game Edition out yet ? http://developer.anscamobile.com/content/getting-started-corona-game-edition
The examples look great
Edit: of course I already have those examples but the question still remains… [import]uid: 6086 topic_id: 2262 reply_id: 7336[/import]
