Thoughts on the "new iPad"?

Just saw the specs on the “new iPad”, as Apple is calling it, and I’d love to hear what others have to say. Personally I don’t think I’ll be picking one up, simply because my mom already has an iPad 2 that I can always test my apps on.

The biggest upgrades seem to be the camera and retina display. Although I’m a huge Apple fan, I think I’d rather save my money for a more revolutionary product. They hinted that bigger and better things were coming later in the year, so I’ll hold off for those  [import]uid: 7116 topic_id: 22972 reply_id: 322972[/import]

I’m one of the few who still doesn’t own an iPad so I’ll be getting this one. Seems pretty nice but I don’t see a reason to upgrade from the iPad 2 if you already own one. [import]uid: 79620 topic_id: 22972 reply_id: 91761[/import]

I don’t think your going to see more revolutionary than this device’s new display. It’s more than most desktop computers. That’s some pretty high tech stuff… So unless you’re waiting on foldable digital paper or the scroll maps that they had in Red Planet, you’ve probably seen the next “Big” thing. It can really only be incremental upgrades.

As for the camera, that’s all nice, but it’s not a tool for taking photos. Its too big and bulky to be used for serious photography (though I’ve seen people try). The phone is a much better form factor for “always having a camera on you” and the iPad is still more bulky than a fully loaded dSLR.

Being poor, I’ll look to pick up a used 2nd gen iPad because it should be good enough. Though if the funds land just right… [import]uid: 19626 topic_id: 22972 reply_id: 91764[/import]

robmiracle - I’m not doubting the intense engineering, sophistication, and amazing upgrade of the retina display. It’s mind blowing actually, as you say, that it’s better than many desktop computers. But the device itself is not revolutionary, it’s evolutionary. Maybe the retina display will allow for new applications and technologies that will indirectly make it revolutionary, but the new iPad itself is not revolutionary.

Siri - that is something I held out for. While I don’t use it that much, I consider that something worthy of being called revolutionary. Not because it has changed the world, but through upgrades and more widespread application of it, Siri will change the way we search and sort through information on the web (an ever increasing problem). Not necessarily revolutionary (I think it is, but more as a hardware spectacle), but the screen is important, and moreso for us Corona developers than others.

For one, it heralds that both iOS platforms now need normal/2x graphics. We have, at least until September, a need to support 4 different resolutions, including one that most of us can’t even prototype at 1:1!

But I think the real deal is more that it forces us to consider our apps as canvases, not really pixel by pixel anymore. With so much scaling to consider working to the pixels of the frame just doesn’t make much sense… [import]uid: 41884 topic_id: 22972 reply_id: 91786[/import]

I won’t get one… at least not for a while.

Did you see app sizes downloaded over 3G can now be up to 50Mb? That’s big news for us  [import]uid: 10389 topic_id: 22972 reply_id: 91792[/import]

I wonder if later on the year there will be a 2nd version of the iPad 3 just like iPhone 4 and 4S, I own an iPad2 but I wont jump into buying a 3 just yet. The only thing I see in this new iPad thats worth it is the Retina Display and the new Processor. Besides that Its a bit of a disappointment hearing No Siri? Im not much of a Siri person myself but why not include it? I love apple products and I have spend thousands of dollars in their products but apple just sells the Apple Logo lol its funny how quick they upgrade stuff and then make your previous purchase feel “Old” and wanting the “New” Versions. Nice! The app I’m working on now is quickly getting up there in size due to all the png’s it has. It’ll most likely come close to the 50mb mark when it’s all done. [import]uid: 79620 topic_id: 22972 reply_id: 91805[/import]

I plan on being in line on the 16th for a new iPad. I’ll just go for wi-fi since it will probably be another 5 years before Alaska gets LTE up here.

I can remember when digital cameras with displays were news and thought people holding cameras out in front of them to take pictures looked stupid. But now it’s normal. So will taking pictures/video with a tablet become normal. Because now you can take it, edit it, and upload it all on the one device.

From a development standpoint I do NOT like it simply because I’m a coder and not an artist, so anything that makes art for my games/apps “harder” is not something I want. As a consumer, however, I can’t wait to get my hands on one and see the new screen. :

I read a lot on my iPad, but since I got the iPhone 4S last November I have preferred its higher resolution to the iPads larger display size. So the retina display of the new iPad seals the deal for me. [import]uid: 120 topic_id: 22972 reply_id: 91812[/import]
