[Tips] Sound Optimization for iOs devices

It’s known iOS devices work better using CAF format for sound and music, but it’s a expensive format in size terms. Some tips to resolve this size issue, will allow you to use CAF in every sound (even in music).

-> Keep on mind bitrate and quality. Depending on the sound you normally won’t need any quality surpasing 44Khz and 16 bits (Normally 22-36 khz work well).

-> Use MONO as possible. MONO sounds uses the half of size as STEREO sounds, normally you won’t need STEREO sounds as very few people uses games or apps with headphones.

-> ULTIMATE TIP (FOR MAC ONLY): With this simple trick, you can compress a CAF in a file with almost the same quality and only 1/3 - 1/10 of the original size!!!

In the terminal, go to the folder where your sounds are, and use this command:

afconvert -f caff -d ima4 <<youraudiofile.wav>>

You can use it with any audio format, works best with CAF, AIF and WAV

We were able to compress the play music of Aequalis (about 90 segs of music) in CAF format and less of 1,5mb

Hope it works!

Thanks for the tips. Your solution is valid (you are using IMA4), but to be clear, CAF is just a container file format and is not necessarily optimal or not optimal for iOS. It is not a codec. You may put WAV, IMA4, AAC, MP3, or just about anything inside a CAF. Your solution puts IMA4 inside.

Mono is also good advice.

For further reference, please see our Audio Notes documentation page if you haven’t already read it.
Also, I strongly recommend watching a presentation I made:

I pound the drum on the file container vs. codec thing.
