tools for creating sprite sheets from PNG image files

Hello everyone!

Quick question. Any recommended Mac tools for creating a sprite sheet from a bunch of png files?

Was reading around regarding the spritesheet vs individual images in a table debate, and it seems that one should use a spritesheet whenever possible for performance purposes.

I have a bunch of PNG files now that I would like to put into a sprite sheet. Anyone have any tool recommendations that can get that done?

Not to sound cheap… but free tools would be appreciated! [import]uid: 191855 topic_id: 33584 reply_id: 333584[/import]

I can recommend LevelHelper and SpriteHelper.

http://www.levelhelper.org

Cheap software, very good support [import]uid: 50459 topic_id: 33584 reply_id: 133489[/import]

TexturePacker is one of the most popular… tons of features, reasonable price. Many Corona developers rely on it constantly.

I’ve tried all pretty much all of them and SpriteHelper has been the best by far. It was a bit buggy at first but I sent the developer a long list of issues and he fixed them within a couple days,

It has a built in physics editor and animation creator. Both have been tremendous time savers. I don’t know how we would manage without it. [import]uid: 135827 topic_id: 33584 reply_id: 133546[/import]

I’ve had good luck with texturepacker too. +1 [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 33584 reply_id: 133569[/import]

To offer another, I’d recommend Zwoptex. I’ve been using it for several months and it’s pretty painless. Also, you mentioned wanting to go free and I’m 99% sure Zwoptex is either free or has a free version. [import]uid: 136211 topic_id: 33584 reply_id: 133585[/import]

thanks for all the suggestions. It seems that Zwoptex has a shareware status. Not sure how limited it is yet, but will give it a shot. Just trying to avoid spending money on tools before I know whether I’m going to stick with this or not! [import]uid: 191855 topic_id: 33584 reply_id: 133590[/import]

Hi,

definitely Spritehelper & Levelhelper, comes not only as very powerful tools but there’s a big package of Coronalabs lua code included that makes things like continuous parallax scrolling, collision detection, animation etc. really easy.

The support of the developer Bogdan Vladu is great, whenever something needs to get fixed he almost answers instantly and does the fix as soon as possible (he’s fast).

I enjoyed working with him on my game “Freeze!” (current Coronalabs game of the week), he included lots of stuff I needed to make the game happen. So - naturally - I’m now a fan, and I included this guy in my ingame credits.

Best,
Andreas
