Unreal Engine 4 now supports LUA?!?!

Possibly the most powerful game engine available to you and me now supports LUA!

Shut up and take my money

Hmmm…very interesting. Wish I cared about 3D games, but I don’t. (I know you could do 2D with Unreal, but like Unity the 2D stuff is secondary so you’ll never be as productive as with something like Corona. (Subjective claim, I know, but I think it’s actually fact.))

It may look cool, but 3D production is very expensive with regards to time, tools, resources and money.

The end result can be amazing, however for casual 2D games it’s definitely an overkill.

The later versions of Unity support 2D development which makes it easier to knock out 2D games. You also have the advantage to mix 2D/3D however it becomes a bit awkward at times. I’ve used both and although the potential is great, it takes too much of a production investment for the relatively simple games I create.

If it’s speed of development you’re after, it’s hard to beat Corona at the moment.

Agreed, but holy s**t at that video… thats some unreal technology right there :stuck_out_tongue: (pun intended)

These engines do give artists the functionality and effects needed to create stunning visuals, however they don’t really make the 3D models any easier to produce. I’ve been using TrueSpace, Blender and a bit of 3ds Max previously, and creating nice animated 3D models requires very good skills (as any artwork does).

It took 3 months for an *average* of 14 artists to create the 4 minute Infiltrator demo. Imagine how long it would take for a team of 2 or 3 to create a whole game. I’d love to create things like this myself, but the production budget and time required is something I can’t motivate myself investing in at the moment.

Below is an interesting read about the making of the Infiltrator demo.

Yeah, there is a huge amount of time needed for sure. Thanks for the link, very interesting read!

yeah a while ago i did some 3d stuff in unity, it took half a year and it looked horrible because i had zero art skills anyway i plan to work for ubisoft or some other large games company when im older … or be an indie mobile game dev with corona!
