Update a game with More Levels after Submission

Hi,
We are into Game Development. We would like to know once that once a game has been developed using Corona SDK and the same has been published to the Apple Store / Android Market, if we add more levels to the game, how do we notify the user and how do the users update the app.

Does we as the developer upload the updated app and remove the older one, or the users are allowed to update and download the updated levels.

This is seriously worrying us as per Apple restrictions, that do not allow apps to download code.

You have to fix your new version with the additional levels, you go to iTunes Connect and add there a new version, with all the changes there, you are ready for upload the new extended version,after the review by Apple it is available in the App Store. Hi,
Thanks for the prompt response. So that means we upload our updated binary to the store. The Apple store will remove the older version and only the updated version remains for download.

But how are the user’s notified of this change and how will the app only get updated.

I mean the user’s will have to download the app once again from the store. Correct me if I am wrong.

The user gets a notification when he opens the App Store that there is an update available. He has to download the App and is going with the update… [import]uid: 12632 topic_id: 11161 reply_id: 40496[/import]

Hi blyssmedia,

Do you own an iPhone or iPad with apps on it?

When you open the App Store app there is a section called “Updates” that shows all apps you have that have updates available.

When you update your own app on the store and it is approved, your users will see they have an app with an available update.

Hi,
We do not have a Ipad, we are using Corona to build games, we come from Flash game development background on Windows.

We were worried about how to add levels to a game and keep user’s going on, and we were not sure how to go about it.

Michael here solved our query really fast and we must say that as we read that Ansca staff is active on the forum, had a chance to see it also.

We used your tutorials on techority.com as a building blocks for learning corona.

It has been a great experience so far.

Hi peach,
We have been looking at the new SVG Level Editor for Corona that works with Inkscape and Tiled for faster game level design.

If the game is on the lines of Mario which is Tile based, Inkscape and Tiled will help us to create the level very easily with the dynamics of Physics also.

But like Mario if we have to allow the character to move forward then would we have to create different SVG files for different scenes and use Director to change them within a level or create a long one for 1 level and use panning.

If panning is the way forward, would moveCamera() the function used in your sample Egg Breaker code be helpful or is there some other way out?

I bought SVG level editor and It seems like a good product.

The problem is I bought LIME too, and I haven’t touched SVG Level editor.

They kinda both do the same thing, parse out xml stuff but Lime seems to just way easier for me to use. This is not knocking SVG level editor, but for me since I am way new to programming, and I am about 3 weeks into it and about to finish my first game - LIME just worked out better for me. I am starting to see the limitations, so I might fire up SVG level editor and see what it can do that lime cannot.

Hi,
You mean Lime has limitations, as compared to SVG, we did like the way SVG incorporates the Physics engine and generates a .lua file at runtime.

For a game built using Tiled and SVG if the screen is long (requires panning)… in that case how can Corona SDK help to pan the game as the character moves forward. Somehing like Mario? [import]uid: 56933 topic_id: 11161 reply_id: 40523[/import]

I also have a query about adding extra levels.

I have build my level select screen using Peach’s awesome tutorial which allows you to lock down levels until the user has completed the one before it.

This data is saved to a file leveldata.txt which is then exploded into a table which drives the level select screen.

If I add a new world (extra levels), I’m guessing I’d make a new text file leveldata2.txt and store all those new levels in there.

My question is, if I do the above, and the user downloads the update, will it erase/alter my initial leveldata.txt basically deleting the users saved gamestate or do these files get preserved during updates?
