Updating Corona deleted my source files

I created a working folder at the natural place, next to Sample Applications in the Corona SDK folder inside the Applications folder.

I installed the latest stable and it said that the folder already existed, and asked if I wanted to replace existing the files in it with the newer files. Yes to All.

And it did so.

But it also deleted my working folder with the sources for my apps in it. The .dmg couldn’t have newer file versions of my source codes on it, so presumably it deleted the folder or the entire Corona SDK folder before starting.

Is there any way I can restore the files?

I had some sources open in TextWrangler, but when starting TW it didn’t open them. It should have temp copies of the files somewhere, if it’s a sane text editor. But I’ve not been able to do it that way.

Can you undo an installation on Mac?

I’m so sorry to hear it, @henrik5.  I believe you’ve lost your working folder (unless you have a time machine or other backup system.)

On a Mac, never save stuff inside a dmg, also when it asks if you want to replace a folder, understand that it will REPLACE a folder.

I also lost a working folder once in a previous job in a way similar to this, Windows ask if you want to replace the FILES on the folder, it defaults to “merge” folders when you copy one over the other.

Mac defaults to delete a folder, then copy the other in its place, thus replacing the folder (not the files).

But sorry to say, you did lost your working folder… Depending on your ide you might still save it (some IDE make snapshots of the project), or if you had some backup system or version control, otherwise you lost it.

I didn’t save files inside a .dmg, silly. (Actually, if I had I’d still have my files!)

Didn’t realize Mac OS X deletes folders when replacing them. Either way this was unexpected, all I did was upgrade my existing installation, or so I thought. (Maybe the installation could create a project folder like XCode, Eclipse and NetBeans do?)

I’m using TextWrangler and yes, if it had those options on by default I’d still have the sources. I’ve made sure now, though.

It took 6 hours to re-code the lost bits, so it wasn’t too bloody. I’d hate to think where I’d be if I’d had a bunch of completed projects in there!

Thanks anyway for your replies.

Oh snap!!! I lost my projects because I updated Corona

Is it possible to rescue some code if I have the .app file???

I dont have any other backup but all the .app files of my projects  :frowning:

The .app file (really a folder) will have your assets (images and audio) but it won’t have your source code.

Oh ok  :frowning:

Loosing 15000+ lines of code and the ability to update my published app, really teaches you to take backup of your projects, and never save them in the Corona folder

Happy coding
