Using an app publishing company?

I was recently contacted by an “app publishing and networking” company called Great Play Network, who’s website is very vague about their purpose, other than saying that they “understand the needs of small development teams and we help them through the creation process of the games.” and that they work with some venture capitalist in Brazil to fund apps. Has anyone worked with a company like this? Has anyone heard of this company? Is working with them worth it?

I have also recently been contacted by them however haven’t actually done anything with them. [import]uid: 5833 topic_id: 22653 reply_id: 90351[/import]

They have contacted a lot of people, not doubting their motives, but off late that is the new trend, get developers to publish under a bigger name.

The points to note are

  1. They offer nothing to the developer in terms of Money
  2. They will take portions of your revenues (actually you will get a portion of your revenues once they get paid by Apple)
  3. They will put up advertising, etc on your behalf

This is the new Business Model, become like Rovio rather than create the next Angry Birds.

Give it a little time, I think Ansca will also follow on this path. [import]uid: 3826 topic_id: 22653 reply_id: 90356[/import]

Thanks for your insights! [import]uid: 38000 topic_id: 22653 reply_id: 90362[/import]

Do you want to be a game developer or a marketer? Most people here are shooting for the former, but the latter is needed if you’re going to have a chance at making any money (or, you could get incredibly lucky).

I don’t know anything about that company but I also received an email from them and deleted it as spam. If I were a big deal in the app world I might look at things like that more closely, but since I’m *not* I know those emails are just blasts out to zillions of folks.

The company may have their stuff together, but look for a track record before throwing in with someone like that.

interesting read.

“Often you will find encouragement, followed by suggestions and improvements at your expense but often either no release date or a very delayed release date if you are lucky.”
It is the same for iOS game publisher? Chillingo seems to be pushing out games every week.

Is there any corona developed app that goes with publisher yet? [import]uid: 49513 topic_id: 22653 reply_id: 93903[/import]

Thanks just passing along my experiences…

I would disagree, Chillingo appear to me to be restricting new titles but TBH I only notice their hits.

Everyone is going to be selective, sometimes in the name of quality BUT mainly because their biggest marketing trick is being featured by Apple. When you have a big hit Apple are more likely to feature your next App BUT not if you have games going out every week!

To be fair I would imagine the big publishers have 100s of games submitted for publishing each week, many still in an unpolished state… could you spot the diamond in the rough?

Going with an established publisher is probably the most likely way to get a hit. But don’t think for a second it’ll be an easy ride, unless of course your game is soooo obviously the next number one that everyone will fall to your feet!

Going with a publisher will guarantee a PUSH on publication…

However working with publishers you will find they will not fund development and are very cagey about actually publishing your title. I know this from 20 years games development experience.

No one ever says NO I don’t like your Title, well if its poor you won’t get a reply ! Often you will find encouragement, followed by suggestions and improvements at your expense but often either no release date or a very delayed release date if you are lucky.

Remember the developer contact at most publishers has very little power to sign up ANYTHING on their own decision. They may recommend to a board / committee but often are only there to answer enquiries to make the company look professional - OK that’s a bit controversial ! But he / she will never let on this is the case.

Do what the Tetris guys did in the 80s - be in negotiation will ALL interested parties simultaneously - YOU NEED TO PUT THE PRESSURE ON, otherwise nothing will happen…
