Using public spritesheets in your game

I am an individual programmer and I am working on my first android game with corona. I have no skill of creating/drawing images or spritesheets. So I use spritesheet that I find on google and various websites that provides free spritesheets. My heros and my enemies in the game are all from these websites. Do you think is there any illegal issue of using these spritesheets of other games that were already published? [import]uid: 170210 topic_id: 30466 reply_id: 330466[/import]

Depends on what the license is for those spritesheets. Check the places you got them from - the licensing terms should be spelled out. [import]uid: 160496 topic_id: 30466 reply_id: 122059[/import]

It all depends on the type of licensing the author specified. You will want to go back to the sites you got the images from and find out how you can/can’t use the images. If the author’s licensing allows you to use their work then it doesn’t matter if someone else used it as well.

If you can’t find the licensing you will need to contact the author. [import]uid: 147305 topic_id: 30466 reply_id: 122060[/import]

If you’re using spritesheets that were “ripped” from another game then yes, you’ll probably* get in trouble for using them – in a released product. Using them for dev purposes wouldn’t be a problem and you could then have an artist create new versions for an actual release.

* I say “probably” because what the other posters said is correct – you’ll need to check license terms. But I think I know what kind of spritesheets you’re talking about and in almost ALL cases of ripped sheets from commercially released games you could get in trouble for using them.

Just to throw it out there, Graphics Buffet sells some sprites very cheap, may be worth looking there. (I’d +1 to all what Jay said above.) [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 30466 reply_id: 122109[/import]

Thank you for your replies i’ll consider the graphics buffet. One last thing how am i supposed to contact the author of a sprite image that i have found on images.google.com

You look for their contact info, you can do reverse image search for that - hopefully the image will be on their own site with contact info provided. Just have to dig around a bit sometimes  [import]uid: 52491 topic_id: 30466 reply_id: 122541[/import]
