Video fills for display objects are finally here!

Just kidding! (but keep reading!)

We still can’t use video files as fills for display objects - but I bet you clicked on this post in a hurry, so surely you are interested in this AWESOME feature, right? And since Corona already supports using the device’s camera feed as a fill, surely it’s possible to configure it so we can use a pre-rendered video file.

Here’s the thing: In this forum threadfrom over a year ago, Walter Luh claimed that this was on the roadmap and that it’d be coming after Graphics 2.0 went out of beta. But now, a full year later, it’s still nowhere to be seen - what a lying liar, right? Well, not exactly…

As of today, my feature request for this to be added to the SDK has only a measly 13 votes (and 3 of those are mine). So Corona Labs can hardly be blamed for putting this on the back burner. So get over there and throw some support behind this request, and maybe we’ll finally see this must-have feature get added to the SDK! Seriously! Go vote!

Here’s a link to the feature request: http://feedback.coronalabs.com/forums/188732-corona-sdk-feature-requests-feedback/suggestions/3578468-video-render-to-texture

I gave the feature request 3 votes!  Although not even sure if corona is using or looking at that list anymore, fuse might do things differently.

We look at the list all the time. Feature requests are chosen based on several factors including vote count vs. how hard/easy it is to do vs. how much value it will add to the product.  Then we have to balance that against the bugs we have to fix and the general support we have to provide for the various platforms.

The OS gives us pretty easy access (relatively speaking) to the camera.  Video on the other hand requires using codecs to decode the video.  Video has different wrappers, different ways to compress the video, different bit rates and such, it might not be as simple as “turning on the camera”.

Ahhh, thanks for the insight into this feature request Rob!  That makes sense that video files have their own set of hurdles to jump through.  It’s also nice to know you guys are still using the feature request list to get an insight into what us developers are interested in.  Thanks for the response.
