Video subscription type app ?

My friend runs a tutorial website where he charges people to watch or download his photography tutorials (he also offers free ones).

He has asked me about developing a app to basically do what the website does.

First I need to find out if he actually needs a app or does Apple offer this service already ?

I mentioned PodCasts but he doesn’t seem over keen on that route.

The advantage of a app to him, is getting his name out and about and also he puts on seminars around the country, so he is hoping he can push some kind of notification to the app to tell people about his new seminar coming up etc…

I think he is thinking along the lines of NetFlix/Lovefilm type apps but obviously on a much. much smaller scale.

Any ideas or advice appreciated.

The one thing to be careful of here I think is that Apple tend to reject apps they say are too similar to websites, could just be opened in Safari, etc.

So you may want to talk with him about some kind of additional functionality to help ensure approval or, alternatively, push him towards the podcast route as you previously suggested.

If you can make the experience nicer than one single website, you can get it approved.

I created the “TW Podcast” app using Corona SDK and added in a lot of extra features. Apple approved it, no questions. But my original app written in Objective C was so basic and only showed the twitter feed and website. Apple was not keen on approving something like that.
