Want VoIP in your app? Now you can.

For a new conceptual app that we are launching this summer, I needed VoIP. Or at least a way to have app users talk to eachother over IP.

After some searching, prototyping and testing I found that Twilio would fit my use case beautifully. They have a decent client SDK for voice communication for both iOS and Android, and they allow fine control over who can call who using their REST API on a server application of our own.

But since we are Corona SDK developers (no Enterprise), I needed a Corona Labs plug-in for Twilio. So I got in touch with Stiven Deleur from deleurapps.com and asked him if he could develop a plugin for us. And he did!

It’s finished and now waiting for approvement by Corona Labs. Hopefully soon!

Edit: it is online!

It’s currently for Android only. But if you need it to work on iOS as well, I think Stiven would be glad to pick up the assignment (for a fair price).

So please, Corona Labs, could you check and approve this wonderful plug-in?

Thanks and best regards,

Update 05/20/2016: You can find the plug-in here: https://store.coronalabs.com/plugin/twilio

There is a little backlog on plugins. It takes a fair amount of manual work on our site to make them happen still. We are working as quickly through them as we can.

Rob

Hi Rob, thanks for replying.

First, I really appreciate the time and effort you guys put in checking those plugins as well as your activity on this forum.

Not to be pointing fingers :), but our decision to make the plug-in public, was based on your estimation on the approval of plug-ins. In your reply to this forum post you mentioned a “couple of days, assuming all is good with the plugin”. Is that still your definition of a little backlog, or has it grown larger? And if so, by how much?

I want our developers to get started soon and for our development workflow, using a public plug-in was by far the easiest way to get going. Do I need to consider purchasing an Enterprise license and host the plug-in for ourselves?

Looking forward to your reply.

Best regards,

~Rob Vermeulen

I’m investigating.

Any updates?

Still working on it…

That is quite a big investigation if you ask me.  :)

I know right

It’s the plugin that’s currently being processed.

Rob

Rob, you’re keeping us in suspense. This is not a good perspective for our future plug-ins.

I think you need to reboot your processor

lol

Well, I actually took a leap of faith with this plug-in. There was always the risk of delays. Paying someone $$$$ to develop a plug-in that enables VoIP in Corona SDK, and offering the plug-in for free to the community seemed like a good idea at the time

I’m considering removing the plug-in from the marketplace. If anyone wants to license it for their own use, please let me know.

I wish we had paid plugins, it nice that you tried to do it for free.

I currently have no use for voip ,but I imagine lots business apps might like it.

Hope you keep it up on marketplace (maybe ios)

Tada! It’s online.

I just received the information that our plug-in is approved. Here it is: https://store.coronalabs.com/plugin/twilio

Congratulation! Is there an official documentation?

Thanks!

Documentation is here: http://twilio.deleurapps.com/ but you will find a link to the docs on the plug-in page as well.
